Hi everyone! So we've been receiving a lot of page views recently due to the popularity of a video about another yogini running classes to a heavy metal soundtrack that's gone viral. That's led to people wanting to learn more about yoga and heavy metal, which is great!
We'll return... eventually. Right now, I'm running for the Virginia House of Delegates, which requires nearly all my attention that isn't already dedicated to my family.
In the mean time, if you're ever in Pittsburgh, I strongly recommend checking out the original heavy metal yogini Kimee Massie and her BLACK YOGA classes, set to doom/drone/ambient playlists created by her husband Scott.
Kimee inspired me to launch DY in 2014 and her classes are absolutely one-of-a-kind. I had an incredible experience three years ago this month, taking a round trip bus to and from Pittsburgh to practice Black Yo)))ga on a super cold February day and it was worth the whole trip. Kimee and Scott were as friendly as they were cool and if you're a metal person like me who's also serious about yoga practice too, their class is the real-deal experience.
If you're not in Pittsburgh, they have a CD and DVD out too that I highly encourage you to check out (check out the link below).
As for Darkest Yoga... we'll be back. When I ran it, I couldn't afford the $3K-$4K it costs to go through a yoga teacher training program, so we had some amazing local metal yoginis who stepped up and led our classes instead while I took care of the business side of things. Once I'm credentialed to teach myself, I'll bring it back and we'll rock & flow together once again on the blackened mats.

Hi everyone!!
Seeing this story seemed like a good occasion to give an update about what's happening in our metal & yoga world with a FAQ:

Q: When are you going to have classes again?
A: I'm planning to relaunch DY in the next year.

Q: Why so long?
A: While I loved administering all the business and community-building aspects of DY last year, I really, really want to teach classes myself but I'm not a trained teacher... yet. I need to sign up for and complete a yoga teacher training program first.

Q: Would you be the only teacher?
A: No, I would still love to work with the freelance contractors who were absolutely fabulous last year. I'm so beyond fortunate to still call them friends today, along with the volunteers who helped me so much with the business side. I'm also so grateful to CrossFit Capitol Hill for providing us the space. How amazing.

Q: So, where will classes be / where do you want to take this thing?
A: In the long run, I want to teach yoga as a secondary career (I'm already a journalist and metal vocalist... might as well add yoga teacher to the resume!). I have this dream of sharing yoga at metal festivals around the world; but I need training first. Locally, once I'm trained, I'll be looking for more permanent locations in Northern Virginia and Maryland and free or donation-based classes in D.C. I also love to travel, so I'd like to have small group sessions at homes, venues or wherever I can help people.
