Why I Don’t Celebrate International Yoga Day 06/20/2021

"In the United States, mainstream yoga has been taken over by the dominant White, able-bodied, cis-gendered cultureβ€”appropriated, capitalized, and reduced to a physical self-care practice and wellness lifestyle choice. In the West, the neo-colonization of yoga, personal and systemic racism, and Hindu-phobia have erased the traditional roots of the practice, ignored the people and teachers whose region it came from, and caused more separation than unity. International Yoga Day, a so-called celebration of yoga, is often used to gaslight the very real issues of discrimination and prejudice faced by South Asian and other BIPOC yoga practitioners in predominantly white yoga spaces.

So, the question many may have now is, how are we to honor and celebrate yoga? The answer lies in yoga itself. We celebrate yoga every day by practicing all the eight limbs with dedication. We honor the roots of the practice, and the land, and the teachers who gifted it to us. We can uplift and amplify diverse teachers, experts, and authors. We can offer spaces that are truly inclusive of difference. We can be accountable for the harm caused by racism, and speak out when we see oppression. We can recognize our shared humanity and the potential of the practice to transform our individual and collective suffering. We can embody compassion and courage in service not just to some of us, but to all of us. That is how an international day of yoga should be lived." ~

Why I Don’t Celebrate International Yoga Day A devoted yogi contemplates the meaning of the co-opted celebration.

Do you ever feel like there's just a lot of *stuff* in your space?? Like maybe you feel restless or overwhelmed or out of sorts or fidgety or just plain full of icky sticky stale old energy *stuff* that seriously needs some refreshing?? Yeah, me too πŸ˜‰

Thankfully, whenever I *do* catch myself feeling this way, my practice helps remind me that *I* am the curator of my space... And it's up to *me* to decide what *stuff* I'm going to allow in my space and what *stuff* I'm going to let go of, so that my personal space can once again feel spacious, light, and free.

This is one of my go-to guided visualization style that *always* leaves me - and my space - feeling renewed, restored, and re-filled with clarity, intention, and ease.

If you're feeling a little stuck in *your* own space tonight, I welcome you to join me in this simple geared towards cultivating some bright new energy - in your space, body, mind, and spirit β€οΈπŸ™πŸ»βœ¨

Have you ever paused to consider just how absolutely miraculous your is?!

Seriously though. Breathing (thankfully) happens autonomously, without you having to pay it a single thought. It fuels you, nourishes you, cleanses you, and contributes to literally every single process in your body and mind. It's pretty amazing!

Not only that, but did you know that because of your breath, you have a superpower? That's right! You do!

Because of your breath, you have the ability to interact & engage directly with your nervous system- that otherwise automatic part of you that is responsible for keeping your body & mind in a fine-tuned, balanced, healthy state of being.

Your breath is literally a direct access channel into your overall health & well-being - mind, body, & soul.

How you breathe - fast, slow, short, shallow, long, deep, full - brings you either closer to optimal functioning, healthfulness, & well-being, or it takes you further from it. And because breathing is an automatic process that you otherwise don't have to think about, well... It's easy to fall into the trap of not thinking about it! But this is a huge mistake! Why ignore this incredible superpower you've been gifted?!

So tonight, I invite you to pause. Take even just a brief moment. Be in your body and feel into your breath. Give it your full, undivided attention. And let it remind you of this magical, incredible power you carry. This power that's with you - an integral part of you - every moment of every day, everywhere you are.

Be with your breath. Breathe. Feel. Balance. And heal. It's here for you, waiting for you. Why not need the call?

What the world needs now is:

Love.
Compassion.
Kindness.
So much more kindness.

But it's not going to happen on its own. Things won't change until people change. Until we all change. Until we as a human collective do the actual uncomfortable necessary work of generating change.

This is why I am so deeply committed to doing the work - day in and day out - of cultivating love, kindness, and compassion for all humans; for all living things.

Do I always get it right? Heck no. Far from it.

But am I steadfast in my commitment to staying uncomfortable, asking questions, acknowledging my missteps, learning about my blindspots, and beginning again?

You'd better believe it.

And it's practices like these - this Metta (Loving Kindness) Meditation - that support me in this lifelong journey of being a more loving, accepting, kind, compassionate human being - for ALL beings.

It starts with me. It starts with you. It starts with us. Each and every moment of each and every day.

It's been crazy stormy today. Like, thunderstorms from the moment I woke up this morning until just a little while ago. Loud, booming, and dramatic. β›ˆ

On days like today, I find it's easy for me to get caught up in the storm. In all the crashing thunder and the churning clouds and the pounding rain. In all that movement, all that noise. ⚑️

And yet, now, when I look out my window, I see the sky. The sky that's been there all along. The sky that was patiently holding all of that nasty crazy weather just hours prior. The sky that's always there, and always will be there - no matter how intense the storm may seem. The sky remains. β˜€οΈ

02/06/2021

Good afternoon, friends - first, let me begin by offering my deepest, most heartfelt gratitude to YOU - yes you! - for walking beside me over this past year after the world as we knew it changed, and along with it, my standard mode of teaching yoga and meditation shifted away from a physical location and onto the world-wide-web. Together, we explored this strange and exciting new world of on-demand and live-streaming yoga from the comfort of our respective living rooms (and bedrooms, basements, kitchens, hallways, decks, and everywhere in-between!); I've experienced so many moments over these past many months that have taken my breath away - watching how, even amidst a global pandemic and the complete up-ending of whatever your "normal" was in the before-days, you held steadfast to your practice and remained committed to yourself, your health, and your well-being: body, mind, and soul.

After moving back home to Florida and finding myself studio-less and completely out of routine, I have spent these past many months in the daily work of finding my way back to my practice; Of choosing, again and again, to begin again. Of cultivating presence, connection, compassion, and forgiveness - for myself, as well as others. It's said that our yoga practice truly begins the moment we step off our mat - in every experience, in every breath, in every moment. This past year has taught me what it truly means to LIVE the practice of yoga - and that, more often than not, my living, breathing yoga practice looks nothing like the fancy poses seen on Instagram and Yoga Journal. It's far more understated; more subtle. My yoga practice shines most brightly in the little, blink-and-you'll-miss-them moments of my day-to-day: snuggling with my son before bed; morning coffee rituals with my husband; enjoying sunny afternoon walks with my dog; taking in the fresh air at a park with some friends. On the surface, my yoga practice these days looks almost unrecognizable compared to what it was this time a year ago. It's far less glamorous; it's messy and inconsistent; it's more uncomfortable than not, and it's work - real, challenging, asana-kicking work. And you know what? I don't think I've ever understood the depth of what it truly means to be in a daily, life-long yoga practice more than I do now. And I'm so grateful for it. And for you. Thank you for inspiring me to stay in it, to stick with it, to live it, and to share it.

In that spirit, I am moving Wayfinder Yoga + Well-Being off of the monthly-subscription-based Namastream platform and onto my personal, free-access YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/ColureCaulfield

I will be using this channel, along with my website and social media platforms, to continue sharing this practice with you and anyone who needs it. I'll be posting regular updates, new yoga & meditation videos and content, and in the coming months, opportunities to practice together live. So if you feel so called, make sure to subscribe and stay connected. I would be honored to have you join me.

For those of you with existing subscriptions to Namastream Wayfinder, your monthly and/or annual subscription will be canceled automatically - there's nothing you need to do. As a gesture of gratitude, I am extending an offer to all former Namatream Wayfinder subscription holders for a free, customized, 60-minute private yoga session (over Zoom) with me, that you can use at any time you need it. Just reach out, and we'll get it on the books. No expiration, no fine print, no catch. I'd just love to see your face and have an opportunity to flow together.

Once again, thank you for being my student, but even moreso, for being my teacher. I am grateful our paths crossed when they did, and regardless of where your path takes you next - whether it's online with me or elsewhere - I wish you good health, good fortune, and a lifetime of joy and well-being.

The light in me honors the light in you,

"Despite being speculative for the present situation, there is a body of literature relevant to the antistress and anti-inflammatory effects of certain seated meditation, yoga asanas, and pranayama practices. Such studies include demonstrating promising immune effects relevant to improving lung health, and reducing viral susceptibility and improving acute respiratory infections. The potential benefits of these practices extend to broader neuroimmune systems, an advantage when dealing with a systemically dysregulating disease such as SARS-CoV-2. Such complementary practices have been found to act as a regulating influence on a number of key inflammatory functions that SARS-CoV-2 disrupts."

To Our Tribe:

We believe times of great challenge ask us to look deeply within ourselves, seek out the truth, and honor what we find.

In this time of personal reflection, we have both found a deep sense of gratitude - for our roots, and one another. We've also discovered a call to evolution that equally honors what we've built together these past three years, and holds space for the necessary divergence of our paths.

It is through this divergence that we've been gifted the opportunity to re-envision how we work together and create a new way of collaborating that remains rooted in mutual-support, love, and appreciation - enabling us both, in our own unique ways, to pursue exciting new adventures along this shared yogic path.

With gratitude and love in our hearts, we gladly share this news:

Colure is making a huge, exciting leap into the unknown by following her hearts' calling back to her original home state of Florida, where she will continue building and evolving our existing online yoga community in really big ways. Stay tuned as she'll be making big announcements in the coming days about Wayfinder Yoga + Well-Being - the exciting evolution of our online platform (Namastream) you've been rocking and rolling with these past few months.

While we're going to miss her so bad it hurts, we know we'll be seeing her often - both online and in-studio soon - for guest workshops, teacher trainings, and yoga retreats.

Lauren is excited to lead the local community forward. She and the team are working diligently to re-open in June, and can't wait to rejoin stronger than ever.

Five Peaks Yoga and Wayfinder Yoga + Well-Being are independent and aligned entities. We are committed to providing you with a seamless experience as we remain connected in our mutual growth and evolution - both in-person and online.

Stay tuned for more details from each of us, coming soon!

We love you and thank you so much for your continued support.

Lauren and Colure
