This is for all the barn families that have a family member who take lessons and ride. I belong to a FB group specifically for riding instructors. One instructor posted this today -- one of her lesson horses passed away, and a brother of one of the riders/students wrote this nice letter. This shows that not only a rider is affected by a horse, so is the entire family and friends:
"Well, I haven’t known exactly what to say. It’s ridiculously difficult to put into words what this guy has accomplished. He did more than just take my sister to the next level, he did more than just win ribbons, he did more than just make a legacy inside the ring. From pictures and post, you all know he excelled at dressage and has taken my sister on journeys and adventures none of us could’ve imagined almost 8 years ago when this all started. But he did more than just that. He created a family that is unbreakable. He made bonds between people that will last forever. From the relationship, I and my family have developed with so many amazing people— Our Barn Family. A family that I never could've imagine. All because of Dater. Along with making a new family, he brought my family closer, giving us an opportunity to bond and share memories: at the barn, horse shows, or with our barn family. These gifts Darter has given me, I will never be able to repay him. He never did squat for me when it came to riding, and for the few times I did ride him, he scared the crap out of me, but he knew what he was doing. He always knew. He protected my sister when I couldn’t. He was always there. He was an essential part of our family. You will be missed Dater. Go give em hell, run free big guy

Maya and Rocky enjoying an evening jump lesson. So much improvement in the past few months with this pair! 🐎🧡🐎
As a farm "owner" I can totally relate to this article -- running a boarding business is tough, but it has also opened up so many opportunities for my family -- from the first days of horse ownership to the present day -- we board, care for our horses and others who have joined our barn family. We share our horses through our lesson program and camps....it truly has become our way of life and I'm so happy to share it with everyone who steps into our barn!
horsebackcourage.wordpress.com We have been keeping horses at home for over six months. I knew the first year would be filled with on the job training requiring not only extra reserves of humor but also resources. What a shockin…
Reminds me of my kids....
This is one of the funniest arguments I've ever seen! 🥳🥳

This is truly a horse of a different color! And being trained right here in our own backyard of Middleburg!https://thezebra.org/2018/04/01/two-year-old-zebra-hybrid-to-compete-in-kentucky-derby/?fbclid=IwAR2faW8H7nwdxblkOBXZT8X2nXNzsWpe6dNyWUXfH8pqOK1CpHvnY1G8z8w
thezebra.org ALEXANDRIA, VA–Paperwork filed with the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission suggests a horse of a different stripe might take all the roses this year in Louisville. FITZGERALD STABLES IS MOVING!
Over the past 10+ years, Fitzgerald Stables has grown from being a small operation in Great Falls, and the past 6 years in Leesburg, to a stable with a successful boarding operation, and a growing lesson business with summer camps, and various other mini camps/clinics for kids and adults. It is with great excitement to announce that we will be relocating our stables to a new facility in Waterford, VA (23 mins. From our present location).
With over 25 acres, our new facility offers: ample pastures and turnouts, a large premium indoor arena, attached center aisle 10-stall barn, a temperature controlled tack room with lockers for our full-care boarders, an indoor restroom, heated wash stall with warm water, a large outdoor arena with sand/stone dust blend footing, an over- sized sand round pen for training, ride out for those wanting to get out and explore, and new board fencing in each of the paddocks. We will also have a limited number of field board spots available, as well.
Our current plan is to transition to the new facility starting June 1st. With a larger facility, we will be able to offer a more consistent lesson program, that is not so dependent on weather conditions. This will not only benefit our lesson business, but will also give each student the consistency that is needed to be a successful rider. Our priority is to continue to run our business in a family environment, as we have always done, and pride ourselves. This allows us to personally know each of our customers and provides us the opportunity to better serve each of you!
We are really excited at this new opportunity and cannot wait to share this beautiful facility with you! We hope that all of our boarders and lessons families will continue to be a part Fitzgerald Stables!
We had a fun & positive schooling session at Turner Farm this morning! So pleased with how both boys behaved and the girls, Charlotte on Fly and Elise on Twister, both rode so confidently! 👏🏼 A busy week ended on a fun note! 🐎 So happy with how the day went 😄 @ Turner Farm
FRANCE BANS TRIMMING OF WHISKERS
Last week the French Equestrian Federation joined their Swiss and German counterparts in banning the trimming of horse whiskers on welfare grounds. Any horse who has had their whiskers removed will be disqualified from competition. Well done France!
The horse has whiskers – or 'vibrissae' – to help him navigate his world. They are super-sensitive, multi-functional sensory organs with densely packed nerves at their root that send sensory messages to the horse’s brain.
These whiskers are so sensitive to vibration and changes in air current they can instantly inform the horse about his environment – for example helping him avoid injury by detecting nearby objects, differentiating between different textures, judging wind direction and identifying food. The horse has a blind spot beneath his muzzle and so his whiskers are a vital aid to his vision.
From the horse’s point of view, removing these whiskers reduces his spatial awareness and leaves him partially handicapped. We in the UK are very backward in many aspects of horse welfare and it’s time for us to catch up, we should have made this ruling long ago...
Rain, rain, go away .... ☔️ 🧥 🥾
[03/19/19] I was finally able to walk out into my fields yesterday, without getting stuck in knee-deep mud! Bring on the March winds....let's hope those April showers are light!
Being of Irish decent and marrying another "Irishman", I tend to get a bit nostalgic when St. Patrick's Day arrives , so bear with me-- here's a nice article on Ireland and its Thoroughbreds
bloodhorse.com The Irish have developed a unique understanding of the horse, one passed from generation to generation along with a relationship fused through time to form the bond of mutual dependency that exists today.
looking for something fun to do?
[03/16/19] We feel like Spring is officially here -- with temperature in the 50s and above daily -- thank you to all our parents and students who came each week, through rain (yes, - LOTS), wind, cold temps and sometimes snow to ride and continue with lessons ....it is that type of dedication that makes us know that what we do makes a difference in the lives of our students. We are so happy to share our horses with each and everyone!! Now let's get back up on that horse and ride!
It was a good day 🙂 @ Fitzgerald Stables
