This weekend, our students performed lion dance and kung fu at the GBCCA 70th Anniversary Celebration Gala!

Our team had a blast. It’s great to see how far they’ve come, not just in skill, but in becoming more and more confident and comfortable on stage too 🤩

We made Team USA! 🇺🇸

A big win for Wu An Martial Arts! After years pushing each other, competing, and representing the sport across the US, coaches Jon and Jenna will be heading to the World Shuai Jiao Games in October!

This year's competition will be in Montesilvano, Italy, and they’d love your support in getting them there! Every bit helps!

Help send Jon and Jenna to Italy:

🔓 New achievement unlocked! 🎉

Ryan L recently earned his brown belt & 2nd stripe in Shaolin, becoming the first student at Wu An to reach these ranks 🔥 He had to pass a series of requirements, including bare hand and weapon work, both solo and partner. His next level will continue to build upon these skills 💪

We run two kung fu curriculums in parallel at Wu An: our own belt system and the YMAA (Yang’s Martial Arts Association) stripe system. Colored belts give students incremental goals to attain as they establish their foundation before transitioning into the YMAA system for their stripes, which consists of 10 base levels.

🎉 Big congrats to everyone who tested their YMAA requirements this weekend. We're proud of you and all you've accomplished so far! 👏

Great fun at our (almost) summer party too! ☀️

Our students performed in Roslindale alongside this weekend. We’re so proud of them and their growth over the years. They embody the true meaning of kung fu by showing up, putting in the effort, and doing the work 💪

They’re just getting started and we can’t wait to see how far they go!

Zong He Quan (宗鶴拳, Ancestral Crane) primarily centers on two expressions of power: Shaking and Whipping. Rather than muscular tension, the power often comes through relaxation, staying rooted in the legs, loose through the spine, and released outward like a whip.

Shan He (扇鶴, Fanning Crane) is a fundamental White Crane sequence. Short by design, it allows practitioners to focus on staying soft and relaxed while manifesting power outward. Here’s Coach Jon performing it in Indianapolis at the beginning of the month.

In Chinese martial arts, we talk about the saber, spear, sword, and staff: 刀槍劍棍. Four different weapons and four different energies.

The staff (棍, gùn) is considered the foundation of all weapon training. It teaches distance, timing, connection, and structure without the danger of an edge. It’s said that after one becomes proficient in the staff, every other weapon opens up more easily.

Here’s AC (aged 9) demonstrating Qi Mei Gun (齊眉棍), our fundamental White Crane staff sequence.
