I was sitting at my desk, prepping for a meeting I'd run many times before, and my heart rate spiked. My hands went clammy.
A morning not long after, I woke up with shingles on my face and was worried about losing my eyesight.
I finally stopped trying to explain away what was happening.
For years I called that state drive and engagement. I was leading teams, hitting outcomes, my calendar was packed, and I felt like that meant I was finally important. The exhaustion, the tight jaw, the lack of sleep, all just "normal" things if I wanted to succeed.
Now I know that version of success was fed to me. My nervous system was staying activated so the workplace didn't have to change.
So I stopped explaining it away and started asking what it would take to come down off that ledge. I said no without justifying it. I stopped taking on what wasn't mine to carry. I stopped claiming that version of success. I let my calendar get smaller before I let my body get sicker.
There are a few ways to work with me right now, including pay-what-you-can coaching, closing end of August. Link in bio.
They want you to believe long hours is dedication and urgency is leadership. The people absorbing it, keeping things from falling apart, are disproportionately women, because we were trained to regulate everyone else before anyone taught us to regulate ourselves.
I'm not less capable because I stopped living like that. I'm just less exploitable.
