SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Jaiison Cabrera
Jaiison joined our team this year and brought a ton of wrestling experience and light into the room. Jaiison has been instrumental at helping grow new talent & helping out the coaches in the practice room. He’s been a great addition to the seniors we are celebrating tomorrow, and we’re blessed to have him on the team!

SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Christian Cosme
Christian came out in the offseason at the end of his sophomore year and we are very glad that Christian has been a part of this team. He has worked very hard, year around the last few years and has developed strong bonds with his teammates and the team. Christian also has big goals ahead and we are excited for him and his future!

SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Samuel Hincapie
Samuel has been an active part of this team for three years and has shown tremendous growth in his three years on the team. Samuel has been a pillar of the varsity lineup this year and has had success in his first year as a varsity wrestler. Samuel has also become one of the strongest kids on the team and loves to hit the weights - easily having the best farmer’s carry! We will miss Samuel next year and he has left a major impact on our program, however, he still has big goals ahead as he works to finish this season strong!

Senior Highlight: Valentino Benavides
Valentino came out to wrestle in October his sophomore year. Valentino was a strong athlete from the beginning and has been varsity all three years on the team. Valentino has faced a lot of adversity but has shown how to overcome a lot of that. Last season, while wrestling 190, he decided late in the year to jump weight classes, giving up 15 pounds, to try to compete at 215 and in doing so made it to the “blood round” of regions, almost qualifying for the state tournament. In his 3 years of being varsity he has racked up 70 wins, won an OBC tournament this year, & a District title his junior year. Valentino looks to finish the year strong with big goals ahead!

SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Josue Mota
Josue came out as a 10th grader, right as the season began and immediately was “thrown to the wolves” in the varsity lineup. Mota wrestled up as high as 215 while weighing in the 180s but was always up for the challenge! As a sophomore he became the first wrestler Coach Smorin has ever coached that successfully threw (twice) a single armed headlock from his feet! Mota has been an incredibly hard worker in the room and true student of the sport. He has put in immense work over the last few years resulting in a lot of wins and key moments for the team. Mota also was a region qualifier last year and an OBC champ as a junior. Mota has big goals ahead of him as he works to finish this year and is a pillar of this program.

SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Juan Hidalgo 💫
Juan came out as a freshman but really began his wrestling as a sophomore. Juan was having some solid practices until a fateful accident led to a broken finger and the loss of his sophomore season until towards the end. He then started slow his 11th grade season but went on a terror racking up 36 wins and qualifying for the state tournament at 157 last year! Leading to the famous quote - from 0-2 to state qualifier! Juan is also a dual sport athlete and was 2nd team all conference this year as a Linebacker for the football team. Juan is a very hard worker and integral part of our program as a senior captain. Juan has poured a lot into the younger kids on the team and will be very much missed next year, but first, he has major goals ahead of him the rest of this season.

SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Matthew Hoenshell
Matt is one of the hardest workers and most disciplined young men I have ever coached. Matt began wrestling as a sophomore and has made incredible leaps in his wrestling over the last 2.5 years. Matt is as consistent as they come and is the ultimate example of someone who shows up daily and maximizes his time while motivating his teammates and most assuredly earning their respect as a senior captain. Matt has achieved over 80 wins in his career and has huge goals for the rest of his season & has left a major impact on this program for good.

SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Max Baylis
Max epitomizes hard work and consistency and few have bought in like he has. Max has been extremely consistent and disciplined in his few years wrestling. Max came out the Fall of his sophomore year and lost most of his sophomore year to a trifecta of injuries. But he made up a lot of ground after and was a region qualifier as a junior and has been an incredible leader and senior captain for us. He also has been a great example to the younger athletes of what it looks like to persevere and overcome injuries and to push through and be a leader, while developing some serious grit. Max also has consistently had one of the highest GPAs on the team and is looking to study Marine Biology next year at a very great University. Max has definitely left a very positive mark on the program for years to come.
