โ Know what you want - and why. If you want to avoid a straight trade-off negotiation (i.e. I get this, you get that), then you need to have a deep understanding of what you want so you can be more creative with your negotiation partner. I often tell my negotiation clients to do the six why's exercise. (i.e. Why do you want this? Answer 1. Why do you want Answer 1? Answer 2. etc. etc.)
๐ For example, if you want a higher upfront fee, what will that do for you and/or your company? If the answer is you get to invest in the next generation product sooner, perhaps there is a bigger and broader deal to come to with your partner. Now do that for all of your potential deal terms. What do you really want at the end of the day?

Do you understand what stage your team is? Taking time to consider what stage your team is in may help you assess what they need to move to more effective stages of performance. How can you as a leader help them process each stage effectively so they choose to move to the next stage together? (Spoiler alert: You can't force them to move to the next stage if they haven't had time to process the one before it.)

๐ฌ "What are you most excited about?" It's a simple but powerful question to ask your teams. Look for the areas of their work that tap into their intrinsic motivations and help them navigate paths within the organization that allow them to tap into that area of themselves regularly. If you succession plan based on what you need, you are likely to have hiccups when some of those "slotted" successors decide to leave. If you succession plan by matching your need with what your employees WANT, you will see dramatic improvements in how your organization functions.

It's easy to look at the "shiny" packaging of those you admire, but remember the iceberg theory. You are only seeing what they allow you to see - and that goes for both the good and the bad things.
If you assume that underneath what you see, there is much more complexity, you can invite yourself to be curious with others. This will allow you to approach things from a more neutral position, learn more from others journeys, and be kinder to yourself as you navigate all of your own complexity under the tip of the iceberg.

๐ฌ Most organizations today require influence for success given their own complex structures or the complexity of the markets they serve.
Influence requires strategy, curiosity, active listening, and authenticity. You first need to consider WHO you need to have relationships with to influence a strategy, project, or discussion. Then, you need to tap into curiosity and listening to truly understand the perspectives of those you want to align with. This allows you to marry their needs with your own needs in what is typically called "co-creation" in negotiation. It's critical that you remain authentic in your interactions if you want people to truly connect with you on this level and open up about their true "why" as it's often buried a few levels deep in the corporate world.
It's a much more powerful way to get things done and results in more optimal solutions when you both tap into your "why" rather than trading in favors.

๐ก People process information very differently. Some people need time to absorb information before they can react to it, while others react as they process, and in fact, it helps them internalize what they are taking in.
How are you or your organization allowing for different processing styles in how you provide information and ask for input? What technology can you use in addition to meetings to allow your deep processors to take it in before providing feedback? How can you create space for discussion for your vocal processors? In the ideal scenario, you have methods that allow for both processing methods to absorb the information and provide thoughts.
And, in cases where you cannot be as flexible, how will you encourage all members of your team to contribute their unique perspectives even when the situation is not ideal for them? Hint: Trust is key when you are asking someone to move outside of their comfort zone.

๐ฌ Telling someone they do a good job when they achieve a goal without acknowledging them when they are going through the hard stuff will always feel transactional. Be the leader that cares. It only takes a small amount of intentional time to show you care. Make your one-to-one meetings about your direct reports - not you. Stop. Make eye contact. Really listen. Then, acknowledge your teams for their vulnerability, their hard work, and/or consider how you can help them clear hurdles where you can.

Just because you are not good at something to start does not mean you should abandon it. The key is to understand WHEN to endure versus quit. You need to understand how what you are focusing on taps into your intrinsic motivation or fits into the big picture for you.
