Sadly, a few dozen ash trees in Hoopes and Everhart Parks are dying, due to the invasive emerald ash borer, leaving them structurally weakened. While some trees have been treated over the years, the EAB is developing resistance to treatments. As these trees decline, the risk to visitors, staff, and physical assets increases. While removal is incredibly difficult and a visible loss, it is a necessary step to keep our parks safe and usable. Where trees must come down, West Chester is replanting and restoring the canopy with diverse, resilient species for future generations to enjoy. Just this month, 104 new trees were planted on Borough streets and parks.

By necessity work will incur in phases, prioritizing trees near gathering places and infrastructure. A handful of smaller trees in Hoopes Park, far from gathering places and infrastructure in more wooded areas, will be cut short, removed of branches, but left standing, to provide habitat for birds and other critters, which rely on dead trees for their existence. These trees are part of efforts to have more natural, ecologically diverse areas in Borough open spaces.
