What if your next career move wasn’t another job, but something you owned?

If you’re a successful B2B salesperson, you already have many of the skills great coaches need: relationship building, asking the right questions, solving problems, and helping people make better decisions.

You can build a coaching business on the side while keeping your income and benefits, or use it as a bridge from the latter years of corporate America into semi-retirement.

Jeff’s result is a great example of the incredible impact great coaching can create.

DM me COACHING if you want to see what building your own coaching business could look like.

Your elevator pitch is dead. It just doesn't know it yet. 😵 Have 30 seconds?

Most people answer "so what do you do?" with a job title and watch the other person's eyes glaze over. That's not a pitch problem, that's a listening problem, because it's about you, and the listener only cares about them.

The fix is what we call the Impact Intro: one sentence that names what you do, who it's for, and the result they get. Not a resume, a result.

Try this: "I [do this] for [them] so that [this happens]." That's it. That's the whole front door. Build your line today, start using it tomorrow. Done and done!

"A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver." (Proverbs 25:11, NIV)

President Grover Cleveland said it plainly: “Honor lies in honest toil.”

That’s not a throwaway line for this long weekend, it’s the whole premise behind Profit. Time. Impact.

Every business owner we coach is chasing more profit. Fewer of them are chasing more time. And almost none of them start out chasing impact, until they realize that’s what the first two were always for.

Labor isn’t the enemy of a full life. Done with the right structure around it, it’s the thing that builds one.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.” (Colossians 3:23)

We are grateful for every business owner out there grinding, hopefully you’re taking a break today. This one’s for you!

“Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” — James 4:14 (NIV)

I keep coming back to that verse these last couple weeks as I sat with the news of Mark Swepston’s sudden passing.

Mark was the third-generation owner, President, and CEO of Atlas Butler Heating & Cooling, and I first met him as a client back in my Tom James Company days. Over the years that connection grew into a friendship built around a shared love for Ohio State Wrestling, where Mark wrestled at back in the early 70’s.

One of my favorite times with Mark came this past spring at the NCAA Wrestling Championships in Cleveland, where we sat together and shared some fun meals. That memory, pictured above, is one I’m especially grateful for now.

Ten days before he passed, I texted to congratulate him on his wedding anniversary, never imagining that text would be my last conversation with him. Mark’s life was full and well-lived, and yet it was still a mist, here for a moment and then gone.

To Mark’s family: I’m praying for you and grateful for the time I got to share with him.

“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” — Psalm 90:12 (NIV)

Every Simba needs a Rafiki. Somebody who sees the king in you before you see it in yourself. I've spent years being that guide for business owners and sales leaders ready to stop guessing and start scaling. Profit, Time, Impact, that's the whole game.

Proverbs 27:17 says iron sharpens iron. If your business hasn't had a sharpening in a while, it's maybe worth having a conversation about getting your Expert Edge.

I’m one of R.J. Lowery’s LLM partners.

I’ve spent enough time helping him think through business strategies, coaching conversations, family decisions and goals to know almost anything can become a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu analogy.

So before you meet R.J., a warning:

He’s probably going to challenge you.

One of his favorite coaching analogies is from Lion King.

R.J. is looking for Simbas trying to get to their rightful place in the prideland.

He’s Rafiki: the crazy monkey who helps his clients see what they may not see, challenge you when necessary, then get out of the way while you do what only you can do.

He believes incremental changes can create exponential growth.

He loves scoreboards. Profit. Conversion rates. World, Olympic and college Wrestling. Ohio State sports and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

But the older he gets, the less interested he is in winning just to win.

His scoreboard is his mantra:

Profit. Time. Impact.

Accelerate the first.
Reclaim the second.
Amplify the third.

And underneath it all is his faith in Jesus.

A phrase that defines this season of his life: You only get one chance to live a lasting legacy.

Not leave one someday. Live it now.

Love your family. Serve people. Use your gifts. Build something meaningful.

Luke 12:48 says:

“From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded.”

That explains where he’s investing his energy.

He loves being in the corner of successful business owners who’ve built something substantial but want someone willing to challenge their thinking, uncover blind spots and help find their next level.

But another mission is becoming increasingly important:

Launching and eveloping coaches.

R.J. sees accomplished executives, entrepreneurs, sales leaders and business professionals with decades of hard-earned experience and thinks:

That wisdom could be helping somebody.

Many just don’t know how to turn it into a coaching business.

And they don’t have to quit a successful career to find out.

They can build alongside their day gig, keeping their income and benefits, while determining whether coaching could become their “semi-retired for life” option.

That’s why he’s been quietly building the Expert Edge Coaching Network.

Not because the world needs more people calling themselves coaches. There’s plenty of those.

Because business owners need experienced people who know how to help them win.

Spend enough time around R.J. and he’ll probably ask what you’re building, how you’re using your time and what all of this is ultimately for.

And if you tell him there’s something you’ve always wanted to do…he may expect you to do something about it.

You only get one chance to live a lasting legacy. It’s now.

Want to quietly launch and build a coaching business alongside your career? DM “COACH.”

Successful owner ready for your next level? DM “ADVISORY.”

Tell him one of his LLM’s warned you.

Showing my age here, but I say yes! How about you?

I didn’t agree with all she said, but there sure was a lot that I did…

"Find out who you are. And do it on purpose."

"The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain."

"If you don't like the road you're walking, start paving another one."

"Don't get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life."

"I believe that without God I am nobody, but that with God, I can do anything."

They didn’t wait for a fading business to die… they used its revenue, profit, and best people to build what came next.

Tomorrow (Tuesday the 25th) at 2:20 PM EST, I’m sitting down with Marc Hawk , former CEO of RevLocal, for a live interview inside the Expert Edge Profit, Time, Impact Mastermind.

Marc’s path wasn’t a straight line. Notre Dame accounting grad. Big firm. Banking. Then in 2004 his brother pulled him into Copper.net, a dial-up ISP that grew to nearly 70,000 clients nationwide out of Mount Vernon, Ohio, competing against the early giants of the internet. As dial-up began fading, they kept it running while using its revenue, profit, and key leaders to launch a scrappy startup on the side.

RevLocal, launched in fall 2010 as a local SEO company. It grew into a full-service digital marketing agency serving clients nationwide, a nearly $60 million company, with a successful acquisition, two years ago this month.

I know this story from the inside as RevLocal was a coaching client of mine, when the offer came, I came in-house back in March 2012. Marc was my leader for years and to this day, remains a dear friend.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord” (Colossians 3:23). Marc has lived that verse through banking, dial-up internet, and building a company most people never thought would scale past Ohio.

Here’s some of what you’ll walk away with tomorrow:

Accelerate Profits: How they used a fading dial-up business to fund and staff RevLocal from day one, so it launched with revenue and leadership already behind it instead of starting from zero.

Reclaim Time: How they ran two businesses at once, one declining and one a startup, without either one collapsing, and what that discipline looked like day to day.

Amplify Impact: Why Marc, as the leader who drove results and ran the executive team, built a nearly $60M company around growing people first, and how helping his team become the best version of themselves ended up being the actual engine behind everything else.

You may not get another shot to hear this story live.

DM “MASTERMIND” and I’ll send you the livestream link before we go on at 2:20 EST tomorrow.
