A Bali Biologist’s Cassava “I Am Not Plastic” Bag Dissolves in Hot Water and Is Designed to Be Harmless to Sea Life. 🌊
Kevin Kumala, a biologist and co-founder of Avani Eco in Bali, Indonesia, developed a bag from cassava starch, vegetable oil and organic resins to replace single-use plastic. The company says it is compostable, dissolves quickly in warm or hot water, and breaks down over months if it ends up in the sea.
To make the point, Kumala has stirred a piece into warm water and drunk it. “I wasn’t nervous because it passed an oral toxicity test,” he has said.
The bold claims deserve some care. The idea that fish can safely eat it comes from the company, and we found no independent study confirming it. The bag doesn’t dissolve quickly in cold water, and it costs about twice as much as a regular bag.
Still, it shows how plant-based design can rethink plastic. 🤍
