Effective today, July 25, 2025, the statewide regulation for Blue Catfish changes to allow anglers to keep 10 fish of any size but only one of those fish may be greater than 30 inches. For example, all ten fish could be 23" or you may have nine 20" fish and one 40" fish. This new statewide regulation applies to all waters in Kansas with the following exceptions: Milford Reservoir - daily creel of 10 fish, protected slot 28-40 inches, only one fish above 40" Kanopolis Reservoir - 35" minimum, 5 fish daily Pomona Reservoir - daily creel of 5 fish any size LaCygne Reservoir - daily creel of 5 fish any size Missouri River - daily creel of 5 fish, only one over 30" Browning Oxbow - daily creel of 5 fish, only one over 30" Several rivers in Southeast and South Central Kansas - 10 fish, any size (see page 12 of regulation booklet for full list of rivers and streams; https://ksoutdoors.com/content/download/57787/624484/file/KS%20Fishing%20Regulations%20ENG%2025.pdf) This new regulation is aimed at increasing harvest opportunities while also thinning populations down to allow for increased growth potential. It’s that time of year!!

Now that its finally spring, you'll start seeing anglers post, "the spawn is ON!" But, is it really?

There are two major factors in determining the start, peak, and end of spawning seasons = Water Temperatures and Photoperiod. A warm spring may heat up the water and get fish more active, but they won't start their reproduction activities, until the daylight hours match their needs. Plus, you need to consider our South to North "gradient" that impact air and water temperature, rain events, and lake characteristics, such as water clarity and depth.

Take a screenshot of the graphic from this post. That way the next time your buddy says the fish are "on the banks" because the redbuds are blooming or the moon cycle is perfect, you can verify the timing may be right. But either way, just go fishing whenever you can, especially in the spring!

Trout stocking Alert!!!!! Trout will be stocked today Dec. 26 at Minded Land Pit #30 and Ft. Scott Fern Lake. Tomorrow Dec. 27 Trout will be stocked at ESU-Kings Lake, Sedgwick County-Vic's Lake, Wichita-O.J. Watson Park Pond, and Hutchinson-Carey Park Pond. Many other location throughout the state will be stocked next week. Fishing success should pick up with more Trout in the water.
