Two Leagues, More Opportunities to Play Ball in 2027

As we plan for next summer, we’re building around what teams want—and what works for their communities.

For many Wichita Independent Baseball League teams, that means playing close to home. Wichita has enough players and teams to support a league with limited travel, and most of our Wichita clubs prefer that approach.

Smaller communities have a different situation. They may have enough players to field a competitive team representing their town, but not enough to create an entire local men’s league. Traveling to neighboring communities is an expected part of playing ball.

That’s the thinking behind the Wild West Baseball League, now being developed for summer 2027.

We’re looking at 12 potential locations: Alva, Enid, Hutchinson, Kingman, Larned, Newton, Perry, Pratt, Rose Hill, Stillwater, Wellington, and Wichita.

The Enid Flyers plan to join the Wild West League, and the Wichita Braves are also part of the proposed lineup. The locations shown on our poster represent a mix of existing clubs and possibilities we’re exploring—not twelve finalized commitments.

The Wichita Independent Baseball League will continue serving teams that want to play primarily in the Wichita area. The Wild West Baseball League will provide an option for teams ready to travel and represent their communities across the region.

Toward the end of this week, we’re meeting with people in Newton, Larned, and Hutchinson to help solidify—and hopefully finalize—plans to take the field in summer 2027.

There is still work ahead as teams, ballparks, and schedules come together. Our goal is to give more players a place to play and more communities a team to call their own.

Henley Goes the Distance as Rapids Beat Braves, 4-1, in Kingman

KINGMAN, Kan. — A game that started the day without a playable field ended with Whitewater Rapids pitcher C. Henley going the distance Saturday evening.

After heavy overnight rain left the Whitewater field underwater, the Rapids and Wichita Braves were left scrambling for a place to play. Wichita Braves coach Bob Frey called in a favor through a Kingman connection and was able to secure George Arensdorf Memorial Field for the game, allowing the clubs to move the contest to Kingman and keep it on the schedule.

Whitewater made the most of the opportunity, defeating Wichita 4-1.

Henley turned in the performance of the day, throwing all nine innings and scattering 11 Wichita hits while allowing just one run. He struck out nine, walked one and threw 104 pitches.

Whitewater broke through first in the bottom of the second inning. J. Kraisinger and J. Mullins reached after being hit by pitches, and after the runners advanced, L. Miner delivered a two-run single to left field, putting the Rapids ahead 2-0.

Wichita answered in the third. Pitcher B. Ware singled, moved to third on a B. Clark single, and scored when A. Winter grounded out, cutting the Rapids’ lead to 2-1.

That would be Wichita’s only run.

Henley kept the Braves off the scoreboard over the final six innings despite continued traffic on the bases. Wichita finished with 11 hits, including two apiece from Clark, C. White and Ware, but Whitewater repeatedly worked out of trouble.

The Rapids protected their one-run advantage until the seventh, when they added insurance against reliever Glamann.

Henley opened the inning with a walk, and J. Ellis doubled to left, scoring Henley and extending the lead to 3-1. Later in the inning, Mullins singled home Ellis to make it 4-1.

Henley finished the job himself in the ninth. Wichita again put runners aboard when White walked and K. Konda singled, but Henley struck out Glamann and induced B. Clark to ground out to first for the final out.

Miner led the Rapids offensively, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Ellis had a double, an RBI and scored a run, while Mullins added a hit, an RBI and a run scored. B. Horne went 2-for-2 with a walk.

Ware gave Wichita six solid innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out five. Because Wichita trailed 2-1 when he left and never tied the game, Ware was charged with the loss. Glamann worked the final two innings, allowing two runs on three hits with three strikeouts.

The victory capped an unusual day for both clubs. With Whitewater’s home field unplayable, Frey’s Kingman connection helped save the game, sending both teams west and giving them a chance to complete a full nine innings at George Arensdorf Memorial Field.

HONEY, KEESLING EARN WIBL WEEK 2 HONORS

BC Outlaws slugger J. Honey and Enid Flyers pitcher C. Keesling have been selected as the WIBL Player and Pitcher of the Week for Week 2.

Honey earned Player of the Week after a huge performance in BC’s 19-18 extra-inning win over the Wichita Braves.

He finished with three hits, four runs scored, four RBI and two home runs. His biggest swing came in the bottom of the 11th inning, when he launched the game-winning home run to give the Outlaws the walk-off victory.

Keesling earned Pitcher of the Week after dominating Whitewater in Enid’s 8-1 win over the Rapids.

The Flyers right-hander worked six scoreless innings and struck out 13, repeatedly shutting down Whitewater rallies and giving Enid control of the game from the mound.

Both performances stood out in a week filled with big offensive numbers and strong pitching efforts across the league.
