When I was 12, I bowled in a youth league in Thailand. The best bowler? A 12-year-old Thai girl with perfect form—and a very strict father. He was a retired Army general who watched every shot through binoculars, then barked critiques in Thai. Even on strikes. She looked cold and unfriendly… but once I got to know her, I found out she hated bowling. Not the game—the pressure. The joy had been squeezed out of it.
By the time I left at 14, she had quit altogether. She disappeared from
the sport—despite being the best.
