I use terms like "healthy" food and "junk" food, but sometimes with patients this turns into thinking in terms of "good" and "bad".

🌈Remember it's just food. No need to feel anxious guilt after having a treat once in a while. Also no need to act superior to others when you eat more vegetables.

πŸ”₯All food is made up of calories and macronutrients. When you eat a donut, you're processing, digesting, and metabolizing that food. It's not like you just stole something or beat someone up (things that are usually actually bad).

Strive to eat wholesome nutritious foods. Have a treat once in a while. Don't feel bad about it.

πŸ¦„The fitness and health industries are, unfortunately and ironically, built on the platform of fear. See, it's easier to convince you to buy a supplement or diet or product if you're concerned the alternative could make you fat or give you cancer or kill you.

πŸ“I know this sounds extreme but a quick glance over the recent hysteria caused by the Netflix documentary, What The Health, exemplifies this as a prime example. That film has caused so much anxiety and distress over how to eat, it's frankly scary to see and I can't help but wonder how many disordered eating habits have been triggered directly because of it.

🎳Listen, if there's one thing I wish everyone could know and understand about nutrition it's this --> there is no reason to let it stress you out. There is no reason to let it consume your every waking moment and cause fear or anxiety or worry. The idea that there is a "good" food or "bad" food or "healthy" food or "unhealthy" food is a misnomer in and of itself, designed to create more fear. Because too much or too little of anything (water, included) will kill you. And the sooner we realize moderation, above all else, is the key to success, the sooner you'll be able to let go of any and all fear associated with food.

πŸ¦„So, back to my original point: the best diet? There isn't just one. It's whatever you enjoy most that you can stick to in the long-term while making consistent, measurable progress.

Oh my holy hotness! β˜€οΈ It's been in the low πŸ’―s in St. Louis πŸ”₯ and we are melting in FogaFitness. As much as I hate summer, heat and sweating, I actually love running a short 3 miler or sprinting at the track in the heat. Weird, huh?!? I think it's because I know I'll be hot and sweaty so I'm mentally prepared. Nothing worse than making an effort to shower and get all dressed up only to be a soggy-bottom sweat pool just walking to the car. Once I'm hot, it's over! We have to be careful in the heat though. Here are 4 smart tips from the king of running to prepare and recover from an outdoor sweat session properly. πŸ¦„There are some who say women shouldn't lift heavy weights. One well known woman, in particular, publicly cautioned all women against lifting more than 3lbs because it's "dangerous" and will make them "bulky."

β˜•οΈWhich might sound convincing - plausible, even -until you realize most women's purses weigh more than 3lbs, for effs sake, and I don't know about you but I sure as Sirius Black don't see women strapping purses around their shoulders and all of a sudden getting jacked arms and a thick back.

🐣Listen. Women are strong as hell and they should be lifting like it. They shouldn't feel weird about going into the weight room. They shouldn't feel judged or out of place or uncomfortable. Women should walk into the gym without a second thought, toss some heavy weight around, and feel GOOD about themselves - confident and strong and powerful. Not like they're doing something bad or wrong or unattractive.

🌡Lifting weights does wayy more than just the boring stuff like increase bone density and improve your metabolism and blah blah blah. Lifting weights and gaining strength gives you a confidence within yourself unmatched by anything else. It sounds cliche and hippy dippy but holy hell is it empowering. And in a world where women are often told to be smaller and and lesser and softer and quieter...lifting heavy weight is, I think, one of the best things we need to encourage them to do. Because screw lesser and smaller and softer and quieter. We need to encourage them to be louder and stronger and confident and proud.

πŸ¦„Lifting heavy weight does more than strengthen your muscles. It strengthens your mind and confidence and sense of self. It gives you an opportunity to identify a weakness, target it, work on it, overcome it, and turn it into a strength. That is amazing. Incredible. And every one of us - men and women - should be doing it in some form. And anyone who says, "women aren't meant to lift heavy weight..." well, we can give them a big, fat "LOL."

Hey Friends! I am neither the fun nor food police but like to share one of my favorite blog posts right before a major holiday just to help keep things in perspective. This was written before the winter holidays but relevant to any festivities where there will be gatherings of friends, families and buffets!

Top 10 list includes (for those who like to skim):
1. Choose homemade over store bought treats.
2. Make it worth it. Quality over quantity.
3. Be present and mindful.
4. Enjoy the treat and get on with your healthy life with the next meal.
5. Conquer the guilt.
6. Eat the treat, not your feelings.
7. Pick the 1-2 occasions where a splurge is going to happen and embrace the decision.
8. You do not have to eat and drink everything in front of you at every social event you attend. This is where you are making a conscious choice to what is best for you, not for anyone else.
9. Don't drink your calories. Or at least not all of them. The world will never run out of beer or vodka but Grandma might not always be with us to make her homemade cherry pie. If you have the choice, pick the real, homemade cherry pie not the cherry pie flavored vodka.
10. Don't punish yourself the next day and think you can burn it all off. Doesn't work that way. Movement should be a part of every day no matter what you eat or drink.

Granola=yum πŸ˜‹ Sometimes it's worth the extra, although minimal, effort to go with homemade versus store bought. Loved this recipe because of the pumpkin. Mine is also not technically "Paleo" because I threw in a cup of GF oats. I've been eating it with blueberries and a splash of unsweetened vanilla Califia Farms almond milk.
