“Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in.” -Leonard Cohen

Another week in a beloved place. A revelatory place. A place that doesn’t change me but uncovers something that has been there all along. That which is hiding in plain sight, but is forgotten in the daily hustle and bustle.

What a blessing to retreat to the Feathered Pipe 🪶✨🙏🫎 Thank you Lauren Lewis Yoga for a wonderful week in a sacred place that holds us each time we’re fortunate enough to land💛✨

Presence is hard to find. Maybe it’s easier to rehash the past and fret about the future. It oftens feels that way to me. Distraction is easy, being here... not so much. But really, the current moment is all we have. And all previous moments have led us here, to this one right now. So when we think about all the twists, turns, detours, and missteps it took to bring us right here and now, it’s kind of a miracle... to be here, right now. And the only way we get better at being present is to practice presence.

Not saying it’s easy, in fact, it’s really hard. Especially in a world of constant distractions and bids for our attention. But in a world of distraction, doesn’t that make the practice of presence even more important? What helps you find presence with the here and now?

Today is the day we honor our teachers, guides, and mentors of all kinds. A guru is one who dispels the darkness. This day of Guru Pūrṇimā reminds us that we must be willing to learn in order to gain knowledge that will then become more refined and integrated through the process of inquiry and eventually turn into wisdom. This day reminds us that we remain in the seat of the student and always need teachers who are further along the path. And learning doesn’t happen in a vacuum, it happens because we have teachers and we are willing students. And that beautiful ongoing chain of teachers and students connects us to a deep lineage and history of seekers. What a poignant reminder that we are never alone on this path. 💛 It’s only through the generosity of my many teachers that I have anything to offer as a student and teacher. Happy Guru Pūrṇimā 🙏💫

If there’s one thing you remember to do today, make sure it includes an exhale. Many, many exhales💛🙏

I’m hearing a lot of conversation these days about what is yoga and what isn’t. What is authentic yoga and what is... inauthentic yoga? It’s so important to have these conversations. I am 100% here for it. Those of us who practice and teach yoga need to continue to examine and discuss the question — what is yoga and what isn’t. And I don’t have clear cut answers. I’m not an authority on yoga. I practice, teach, and love yoga, but yoga is a vast, heterogenous tradition that I’m still trying to learn and integrate and teach while the practice itself and its application continues to evolve and meet the needs of the population it serves. I lean on senior teachers far ahead of me on the path to light the way and bring greater clarity to these questions.

But here are two things I’m sure about — 1, that we are having these conversations and examining how we’re engaging with the practice of yoga and how it serves us. And 2, that we take a step back and ask ourselves if the practices ultimately lead us about to the bigger question — who am I?

Do you ever think about how the weight in our feet changes depending on the posture?

How do we bring awareness to our foundation and work with it effectively to create a sturdy, steady base? This is the work in my classes lately — where does the weight go in the feet? It depends on the posture. Weight evenly distributed in all four corners of the foot, or primarily in the heel, or primarily in the balls of the feet. And it’s not just important for the feet, but for everything all the way up the chain. Strengthening the feet and building awareness of how we use them — good for us on and off the mat! I love the transition from Ardha Chandrasana to Trikonasana — how about you?
