Beast is a Harley Quinne descendant

ASHDA TBT. Featured today is 2018 ASHDA E-Designation stallion, HexenBiest (Beast), as an adorable c**t, having himself a grand time out in the pasture. It’s hard to believe that 8 years have gone by and now this sassy little c**t has matured into a big handsome hunk of horseflesh!

Don’t be fooled by his solid appearance. Beast is LPLP, meaning he’s homozygous for the Leopard Complex gene and will always produce offspring with at least 1 copy of Lp. This means his foals will always have Lp characteristics and some form of pattern.

Many years ago, before genetic testing for color and pattern was available, some would have seen Beast as a solid or minimal Lp horse and thought of him as invaluable to a breeding program. Horses like him were generally culled, considered useless to programs that focused solely on producing Lp pattern. Back then, the number of horses like Beast that were discarded based on their lack of spots, is unimaginable. Even today, so much emphasis is put on spots with many breeders of various Lp patterned breeds. At ASHDA, we never think of any solid horse as being less valuable or important than the ones with Lp spotting! Spotted or solid, we cherish each and every single American Sugarbush Harlequin Draft Horse.

Thankfully we can now test and find out just exactly what is hiding beneath these solid looking coats. One never knows what might be lurking in those genes. That “solid” horse very well could be homozygous and one would never know it without testing.

At ASHDA, our emphasis is on producing horses that are conformationally correct with clean genetics, great temperaments, versatility and the athleticism that the breed is known for.

Puff is a Harley Quinne descendant

Puff is well on her way to being the largest E-Designation mare in the history of the breed! Sugarbush Showtime, her full great aunt, was the largest from the founding program and over 17hh.

With her dam being 19hh+ I think she may beat that record handily! Of course, Puff's got a great brain and excellent conformation to back up that height. We can't wait to see what she will do with the right person! And we also can't wait to see how her color changes as she continues to spot up!
