"[The] Clinic was absolutely superb. Kane is an amazing teacher. (I still have a lot to learn and a long way to go.) But the group was also so helpful. Everytime I fell/got stuck, all of [them] came rushing in to help." -Sony from Suwanee, Georgia
"Had a lot of fun and learned a lot. Got me thinking of all the fundamentals as I'm riding. Kane and Tom are great instructors who enjoy what they do. Can't recommend them enough. See you at the Fools Ride!" -Daniel from Huntingtown, Maryland
"In this class we all worked hard AND had so much fun. The class is set up perfectly with one day of drills followed by one day of riding on diverse terrain. Kane and Tom are amazing instructors/people. A great group of students too, differing experience levels (I'm a total newbie), and everyone was super supportive. It was cool seeing how everyone's confidence levels and skills shot up dramatically at the completion of the first day." -Tony from Fairport, New York

Day 2 Level 2 Intermediate+.... taking it to the road.
In the first session we start with bike set up and ergonomics then build upon each aspect from bike lifting techniques through bike balance, friction zone, body positioning, braking drills, steering techniques, maintaining and breaking traction, line selection and tire placement, managing and negotiating obstacles (ruts, rocks, loose gravel, small logs, potholes, hill climb and hill climb recovery, mud, etc.).
The second session takes us into the real world, building on the skills & drills from the previous session. Trees, rocks, ruts and other natural features replace the cones. The controlled environment at Base Camp is replaced by a semi-controlled environment when we hit the road. We review how to interpret terrain features that have been weathered and run through by other off-road vehicles. Our clinics are designed to have a more practical approach and hit basic fundamentals so that riders can gain a solid foundation, experience, and confidence in their machines and themselves.

We keep the rider to coach ratio low in order to semi-customize your experience and to help build a temporary team of riders. Watching riders take on a challenge, sometimes reluctantly, and making it through the other side with a huge smile on their face, their clinic teammates cheering, and high fives all around is super rewarding for all and one of the best feelings to share with the group. When you don't make it through a drill or the real world features and your bike takes a closer look at the ground, your teammates are there to pick up your bike and your spirits. We review the failure point on the spot and, if desired, take another crack at it. Our goal is to help riders build confidence in their abilities and the abilities of their machines.

Day 1 Level 2 Intermediate+ ADV & Dual Sport Riding Clinic! Skills and Drills on the Fools Ride Property.
The Level 2 course is designed to be more off-road leaning and aggressive gravel experience compared to the Level 1. Where our Level 1 is intended to break down individual theories and techniques the Level 2 is designed to combine multiple things and introduce new, more difficult skills. The terrain and obstacles become more aggressive and there are more off road areas utilized compared to our Level 1 during the second session. We expect riders to have the fundamentals and similar experience level from our Level 1 Clinic when participating in the Level 2. Our goal is for riders to get the most out of our Clinic, enjoy the experience, and gain skills so it is imperative that riders have the appropriate familiarity before signing up for our Level 2.

The different surface types Appalachian ADV uses for its routing includes on-road and off-road.
On-road surfaces include pavement, gravel roads, and dirt roads that are generally considered "maintained" (these can include easy-going 2-track). These are generally state, county, and township roads as well as forest service/fire roads that require plated bikes and "M" endorsed driver's licenses.
Off-road surfaces include drivable trails (i.e. Jeep trails or rough 2-track), off-highway vehicle (OHV) or off-highway motorcycle (OHM) trails including single track, other dual sport-type trails, and are generally considered "unmaintained" (although some trail systems will occasionally perform maintenance on pieces or sections to allow continued use). Some of these types will also require plated bikes or trail passes from a forest service agency.
The region you are in does make a difference. There are township/county dirt roads in certain states that have been left unmaintained and could be considered "off-road" (i.e. sections of the Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway in Kentucky or sections of the Infamous Adventure Routes in West Virginia). These roads have been turned into Drivable Trails, requiring some level of off-road skills and will still require a street legal bike.
The terms "off pavement", "no pavement riding", "unpaved routes", and "off tarmac" are used to describe any type of riding that is solely on loose surfaces such as dirt/gravel roads, drivable trails, OHV/OHM, and other less than ideal traction surfaces.
The conditions of gravel roads, dirt tracks, and the various off-road trails can change with the seasons and the weather. Paved roads of various disrepair should also find cause for caution. Appropriate mental awareness and the proper precaution should be taken when the various surfaces are wet, leaf-covered, or snowy/icy.

Prepping the for the Allegheny Backcountry Adventure Loop Guided ADV Tour in June and the 304 Detour Clinic+Tour in July.
Been testing out combos to aid in camping off the bike, navigating, and riding gear.
OBR ADV Gear the small Switchback Tank Bag paired with the 10L Tank Saddlebag and the 14L Enduro Saddlebag with the Explorer Saddlebag System. Also the killer Bottle Wrap. As the Ride Lead I have to be the pack mule!
Grit Adventure Tab with a sim card for service and the DMD2 Android based navigation software with full access to all of the Google Play Apps...so I can watch the 'Long Way' series while I'm riding! Grit is super rugged, waterproof, and has a large screen for my aging eyes.
GryphonMoto riding gear to keep me safe and comfortable while ADV Touring! I will likely run with the Tucson Mesh Jacket, the Maverick Waterproof Jacket for cool mornings and rain protection (that easily stows once I'm warmed up or the rain stops), Hi-Flo Mesh Pants, and Shadow Gloves.
Super stoked to hit some beautiful wilderness and gravel roads in Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia over the next two months! Nothing like camping off of the bike... putting the ADV in Adventure!!!
