To all those wonderful people that came out and helped with "Thanksgiving for Seniors".....Thank you soooooo much. We sent out 350 homemade dinners to shut-in seniors today. This is the 9th year we have done this and I can't begin to tell you how rewarding this event is. It truly touches your heart. We will be doing it again next year, so if you want to help, just let us know.

2014 Senior Fair.....Saturday,August 2nd. Another year has passed and we are about to celebrate another Senior Fair. If anyone has an elderly parent or grandparent, please tell them that this fair is for them and we will have an abundance of information, entertainment and, of course, food for them to enjoy. We are extremely lucky to have so much community support and without that, we just couldn't do it.
I have not used this page very often and should, because it would bring all who visit a much better understanding of what the Sheriff's Office Senior Service Unit does for the older citizens of Mahoning County. I, therefore intend to use it more often, try to educate those that visit and hopefully help you all be better informed about all the services available to seniors in our area. See you at the fair!

We are getting close and things are looking really great for another successful fair. It does offer an enjoyable time at no expense but it's basic purpose is to EDUCATE! I had hoped that putting the fair here on Face Book would help promote the event. So if anyone has any contacts or is on Linkedin, would you mind sending the link out so that anyone who may have access to any senior who may enjoy the opportunity to have a nice day out gets the info. in time to attend? The fair gives the opportunity to get valuable information that may help them make critical decisions that will affect the rest of their lives. We never expect something to happen that will immediately impact us in such a way, but when it does, at least being well informed will help make better decisions.
Thanks to all who help get the word out.

This year's fair will feature live entertainment by Take II. This duo has played at our fair over the past 3 or 4 years and do a fantastic job of getting folks up and dancing....amazing! In addition, Casal Aveda Institute will be bringing students out to offer free nail polish changes for the ladies and arm/wrist massages for the men.
The Grotto Clowns will be out in full to tease and entertain us all and I can't begin to list all the prizes that are being donated. Comfort Keepers is donating a 32" Flat Screen TV to be given away as the Grand Prize. We'll have a great time and at the same time provide an abundance of useful information to our seniors so that if and when they need to make those life changing decisions, they will have the knowledge to make informed choices.
WRTA is offering free shuttle service from the downtown terminal. Seniors living in the city can catch a bus from their home to the terminal and catch the shuttle out to the fair. This is a new service this year.....Thanks WRTA!!

The Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office, Senior Citizens Unit was established in 2007 to improve service and to reduce victimization of Mahoning County’s senior population.

Members of the Senior Services Unit are responsible for the initial reporting of suspicious incidents involving seniors. This allows professionals to determine if there is a reason to suspect whether abuse, neglect (including self-neglect) or exploitation is occurring. Criminal cases are then forwarded to the appropriate authorities for further investigation.

The Senior Services Unit works in cooperation with seniors and their families to help find the appropriate assistance or intervention. It also provides a wide range of specialized training on aging issues for public safety officers who may work with the elderly. The unit conducts assessments of seniors who have been victimized or are vulnerable to future victimization and refers them to the numerous services available throughout the community. This referral system has been successful in preventing future abuse, neglect, or exploitation of the elderly.

A response team is available 24 hours a day to provide intervention or assistance in critical incidents involving the elderly.
