There is a woman I know — and perhaps you know her too — who is the most prepared person in the room, who has done the work, earned the credentials and lived the experience, and who still somehow leaves that room feeling invisible.
This essay is about her. It may be about you.
It is about the silent and deeply ingrained ways that intelligent, accomplished women undermine themselves in the moments that matter most. Not through incompetence. Not through lack of preparation. But through the way they speak, qualify, apologize and shrink in the very moments when the world needs to see them standing fully in what they know.
We were taught to be warm. To be liked. To make room for others even when it costs us our own. And those lessons, however well intentioned, have consequences that follow us into every boardroom, every interview, every negotiation where our voice and our presence determine what we are given and what we are denied.
This essay is not a comfortable read. It is an honest one.
Read it slowly. Then read it again before your next important meeting.
