A Call to End Violence in Our Communities

We are deeply saddened and disturbed by the tragic events that unfolded in Efate last week.

Two innocent babies were abandoned by their mother. One survived, while the other sadly lost their life.

We are also horrified by the reported r**e of a four-year-old girl, a heartbreaking act of violence against a child who deserved only love, care, and protection.

These incidents remind us that violence takes many forms and leaves lasting scars on individuals, families, and communities. We cannot remain silent. We must speak out against abuse, neglect, sexual violence, and all acts that rob people of their safety, dignity, and future.

To the survivors, victims, and affected families, we stand with you. To those working to protect children and support vulnerable people, we thank you. And to our communities, we urge you to be vigilant, to report abuse, and to help create safe environments where every child and every person can live free from violence.

Together, let us break the silence, protect the vulnerable, and build a future where violence has no place in our communities.

Continuing our lead-up to International Safe Sport Day tomorrow, we're spotlighting another Team Up Safeguarding Champion - Mary Mahuk, Lead Social Impact & Inclusion Ambassador for the Vanuatu Cricket Association and Appeal Against Violence Program Manager.

Mary reminds us that safeguarding children is safeguarding the spirit of sport, helping ensure every child feels safe, respected and empowered to reach their full potential.

What an incredible celebration of women's cricket! Congratulations to Imaki, who remained unbeaten throughout the tournament and proudly claimed the Woman Island Cricket Independence Cup title.

A special thank you to Cricket New Caledonia's Stephen for being present and umpiring the Finals, Mr. Simpson Obed, all Women Island Cricket Teams, and our dedicated Women Umpires and Scorers whose commitment and professionalism contributed greatly to the success of the tournament.

We also extend our gratitude to the Vanuatu Cricket Association staff and Team Up for their continued support in developing Women Island Cricket across Vanuatu.

Count down to Vanuatus National Childrens Day with our Anti - Bullying messages to our beautiful Children ✅️

A Milestone Achievement for Vanuatu Cricket Association and Vanuatu Women’s Centre.

Today marks a significant milestone for the Vanuatu Cricket Association (VCA) and the Vanuatu Women’s Centre (VWC). After many years of discussions and efforts to establish a formal partnership through our Appeal Against Violence Program, we are proud to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA).

The signing ceremony was attended by The Vanuatu Australian High Commission representative Mrs Hannah McKnight, Mr Jamal Vira, Vanuatu Women’s Centre Coordinator Mrs Tatavola Matas and staff , Vila East School Deputy Principal, teachers and students from Years 7 and 8, along with Vanuatu Cricket staff and athletes. The event also provided an opportunity to celebrate an early Children’s Day, as this week marks the final week of school before the term break.

This partnership represents a major step forward in our commitment to addressing gender-based violence, social inclusion, and anti-bullying awareness within our communities. By using cricket as a safe and inclusive space, we aim to create positive change and help tackle the high incidence of these issues in our country.

Through planned outreach programs and activities over the next seven months and beyond, we hope to continue educating children, youth, and adults, empowering them to lead meaningful lives and make positive choices. Together, we can help prevent violence, discrimination, and bullying while promoting respect, inclusion, and equality.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Team Up, the Australian-funded sport-for-development program in the Pacific, for supporting this important initiative. We also thank the Vanuatu Women’s Centre for joining hands with the Vanuatu Cricket Association in this shared mission. Together, we can challenge harmful gender norms and create meaningful programs that position cricket as a safe and welcoming sport for everyone.

During the event, students participated in sessions focused on self-respect, anti-bullying awareness, and understanding safe and unsafe touch. The celebrations concluded with a shared lunch and fun cricket activities for all participants.

Together, we can build safer, stronger, and more inclusive communities through sport.
