For all of the sports card collectors out there!

Wednesday Card Facts: 1950 Bowman Baseball

The complete 1950 Bowman set consists of 252 color art reproductions of actual photographs of each player. Cards measure 2-1/16" by 2-1/2." The cards do not have a name on the front, as they would with subsequent Bowman sets. Cards were issued in series (cards that were sent to retailers at a certain time), with numbers 1-72 being the scarcest in the issue. Bowman put most of the HOF players in the first series of cards. The set has all of the great players of the time, Jackie, Williams, Spahn, Feller, Campy, Etc. The first and last cards in the set, Mel Parnell and Billy DeMars are tough to find in top condition. Kids would store cards in order and put rubber bands around their cards, leading to damage to the first and last cards. This is an issue with all Vintage sets. In my opinion,, the Bowwman cards of the early 1950's are the most beautiful cards ever made. Below is an example of just how nice they are.

Happy Birthday to Kansas City/Oakland Athletics Second Baseman Dick Green! The second baseman played all 12 of his MLB seasons with the A’s, in both Kansas City and Oakland. He started every World Series game during Oakland’s three straight championships from 1972-74.

Who was your favorite player during the A's 72-74 dynasty?

Happy Jackie Robinson Day!

April 15, 1947 was Jackie's debut into the major leagues with the Brooklyn Dodgers. He played for the Dodgers until retiring on January 5, 1957, finishing with a .313 batting average, 141 home runs, and 761 runs batted in. The Brooklyn Dodgers also won a World Series Championship in 1955.

More importantly than what he did on the baseball field, was what he did for others away from the game.

Jackie contributed significantly to the civil rights movement in the 1960's and his courage and character on and off the field resonates today.

When you see the number 42 on current players uniforms, think about the man who wore this number for the Brooklyn Dodgers! It will make you proud!

On today's date in 1954, Bobby Thomson (The Shot Heard Round the World), breaks his ankle in an exhibition game with the Pirates. This allows Hank Aaron to start in the outfield, and we all know how his career went!

Multi-Player Cards. 1958 through 1969 seemed to be the best years for multi-player vintage baseball cards. Here are a few! What's your favorite from your collection? Post in the comments!
