Oh yes! The most common sleep topic parents tend to speak and worry about! Sleep has a number of different stages (1-4) that make up the โ€œsleep cycleโ€. We go through 4 stages of sleep and once weโ€™ve gone through them, we either wake up or come close to waking up and then start over again. Now, what does this have to do with the so-called sleep โ€œregressionโ€?

Well, newborn babies only go through 2 stages of sleep (stage 3 and REM) and they spend about half their sleep in each stage. But around the third or fourth month, a reorganization of sleep occurs. Meaning, baby moves from 50% REM sleep to 25% in order to make room for those first two stages. Although REM sleep is light, itโ€™s not as light as these 2 new stages that theyโ€™re getting used to, and with more time spent in lighter sleep, thereโ€™s more of a chance that babyโ€™s going to wake up. Well, we know itโ€™s completely normal for babies and adults to wake up several times during the night. However, the only difference is that adults know how to go back to sleep on their own. While, a 4 month old baby who fell asleep at motherโ€™s breast for example, will wake up and realize that momโ€™s not around so itโ€™s only natural to freak out and not go back to sleep.

Also, sleep props can be very tricky, because although they may be helpful in getting your little one to nod off, lack of them when they wake up means that babyโ€™s not able to get back to sleep again without the help.

Things that could help:

1๏ธโƒฃBabyโ€™s room to be extremely dark! Even if you had to tape garbage bags over the window!๐Ÿ˜œ I mean it!
2๏ธโƒฃTry using a white noise machine. Since babyโ€™s are spending more time in lighter sleep, a white noise machine will definitely help!
3๏ธโƒฃStick to your babyโ€™s bedtime routine!

Now, there are going to be regressions later on in your little oneโ€™s youth. But when it comes to the four month โ€œprogression,โ€ rest assured that this is a one-time thing. Once youโ€™re through this, your baby will have officially moved into the sleep cycle that theyโ€™ll essentially be following for the rest of their life.

What usually keeps babies awake at night is overtiredness. You might think that an exhausted baby is more likely to have a full night than one who slept all day, but itโ€™s actually just the opposite! A baby who has gotten a good amount of sleep during the day even if this might sound too much to you is far less likely to miss the sleep window (the period of time our body wants and expects to sleep).

The time of sleep babies need during the day depends on their age, but up to that 6-month mark, itโ€™s really common for baby to be sleeping around 5 hours a day other than the nighttime sleep, so if your little one is still within this age range, let them sleep.

Sleep Tip #5๏ธโƒฃ: Establish a predictable bedtime routine.

Predictability and Consistency are truly important to all babies and toddlers. When they know what to expect at bedtime, it makes it much easier for them to make the transition to sleep.

Keeping the same general routine every day helps make the childโ€™s world feel stable and predictable. Doing certain things in the same order at about the same time every day helps strengthen brain connections and builds the babyโ€™s confidence by knowing what to expect in a situation.

The reason we recommend feeding after naps and not before is to avoid the feed-sleep association.

Meaning, your baby will think that they need to be fed (breast or bottle) to be able to fall asleep. Which means, they would link the idea of feeding and sleeping. This might also cause short naps or frequent wake ups since baby looks for their association to go back to sleep.
