Horse archery in Canada
Operating as usual
Everyone welcome July 27 and 28! Spectators can participate by timing, arrow pulling or just sitting back and cheering. The original grading event was August 3 and 4, but needed to be moved due to a schedule conflict.
Everyone welcome! Spectators can get involved as timers and arrow pullers or just watch the fun!
The revelry on May Long was a fun and relaxed social experience. We shot some targets, rode some horses, and enjoyed the company.
Now that the long track is set up, individuals can practice any time, but we will still have an organized day for those that want to join a group. Our next practice is June 16 followed by a grading event on June 29-30.
For the 2023 archery season, Kaspian Mounted Archery organized 10 club-level competitions. We did our standard ground course every revelry, so that we could track personal development throughout the year. The 3 Range Ambi had a 10, 20and 30m target that were each shot with left- and right-hand draw (6 arrows per round, 3 rounds, standard FITA 80cm targets). This course allows mounted archers to refine their shooting and includes new comers or individuals not ready to ride yet.
I would like to thank everyone that volunteered in 2023 as scorekeepers, arrow pullers, photographs, set up crew, and all the other tasks that allow competitions to run smoothly.
- 41 archers competed on the course with 22 competing 2 or more times
- Kenton had the highest overall average (68% or 61.1/90)
- Jim and Kenton both had the highest single score (75.5% or 68/90)
- Becky and Tink had the most consistent trendline
- Nicole had the greatest increase from first to last score
- Chloe had the greatest increase from one score to the next
The standard course for 2024 will be the Ambi 6 Position again. It will follow the same layout as 2022 and will allow for some really cool long-term comparisons. Happy shooting!
This is our winter schedule of horse back archery events through to the end of April 2024. We will be gathering every 2 weeks on Sundays for practices and Revelry competitions. We welcome members, past and present, and anyone who is interested in learning more about the sport. After joining in the days events, bring along your favorite grilling food and we will cook it up for you on the open fire Mongolian Yurt grill.
We had a great time at our January revelry with a couple new competitors to the community and our core group of participants. Starting with our skill building ground competitions then bringing in the horses after lunch.
Our AGM went great with no significant changes and everyone looking forward to a wonderful 2024 together and getting back outside as soon as spring dries up the long track.
A relaxing social time followed in the yurt with fine food and conversation.
Hello. If this year hasn’t been easy, this is for you. “One day you’ll look back and realise how hard it was, and just how well you did.”
Hello. I drew this for a friend and I think probably for me. Maybe for everyone. I hope your day is good.

HARCAN Rendezvous 2022
From August 13 to 21, archers from Alberta and British Columbia gathered at Kaspian Equestrian Center for a fully immersive training and grading experience. The main goal was to give experienced archers with their own horses a chance to reach the next level in their horsemanship and archery by focusing on skills development. This event was made possible by an army of amazing volunteers! Meal prep, photography, timing, and scoring were all completed on a volunteer basis. The participants even went above and beyond fixing targets and, when weather necessitated, haying and stacking.
The week started with a baseline Revelry to focus participants on areas of improvement. There were ground courses to isolate archery skills and the Utah Quad in walk/trot and canter. No one had ever ridden this course, but because it was the IHAA postal course, we wanted to get some practice in.
Training throughout the week included strategizing on the Raid and Tower, becoming familiar with complex shots like kikaq, ground, offside, and qabaq. Many archers commented that they really enjoyed having times available for all runs and were able to start gauging speed. Lectures during meals gave everyone a better understanding of mounted archery as a broad community with rich history. The Hunt track was available for archers to challenge their intuitive riding and shooting by upping the difficulty and the necessity to concentrate on multiple aspects. Working equitation lessons gave the horses a break from archery and gave archers more tools to communicate with their horse.
The week concluded with grading runs for walk/trot on the Aussie Triple and Raid 3 and canter on the Raid and Tower. There was also a super fun night shoot that involved a lot of busted glowsticks!
Congratulations to all the archers for your commitment to this sport!
Achievements of archers not pictured:
Abbie Bowering traveled from Kelowna area and achieved her goal of shooting off her horse.
Mike Vincent continued to train his horse for archery.
Zoey Losey put her and her horse first when faced with a very difficult situation.

HARCAN Rendez-vous Day 3
We started with a lecture by Kenton on the subject of the horse psyche and how it can impact our riding and relationship with the horse. Then we moved on to some ground archery and concentrated on refining the release. In the afternoon we rode the Raid on the outdoor track and had the timers set up for riders to learn the speed of their horse to maximize their competition points. Even more new people joined us today which is always awesome to see! Overall another amazing day at Kaspian.
It’s not about being the best. It’s about being better than yesterday.🐎🏹🎯
HARCAN Rendez-vous Day 2
Revelry day! We started the day with the 20m ambi ground competition, followed by a walking ground competition and a long-distance shot! Had some new archers do absolutely incredible and tonnes of fun. In the afternoon we had our mounted walk/trot and canter on the Utah quad course (pictures to come) and everyone did amazing and everything went smoothly. Good times with good people!

HARCAN Rendez-vous Day 1
We had plenty of archers come out for day 1 of the Rendez-vous; some old faces and some new! Lots of new horses were introduced and some refreshed. Made some new targets and played on the track! A fantastic way to kick off the next 10 days of fun and excitement at Kaspian Mounted Archery.
Toes up, heels down, and get your shoulder to the target🐎🏹🎯
