Lessons you can learn from the College World Series. We have some incredible people in the organization, so I asked our Instructors for lessons students could learn from the College World Series. I like them a lot. Here are a few of them.
-Pitchers need to be athletes, first. You will be called upon to make defensive plays. The ball always finds the unprepared.
-The players do not wallow in their mistakes. The mental transition to the next play is immediate.
-Good coaches teach, then let the players play. (Search for that type of environment and get ahead of the game)
-The physical game is completely dependent on the mental game. The best team does not always win. The mentally prepared team more often wins.
-She who adjusts wins. We saw some teams stand in the same place in the box for several innings and never adjust to a pitcher. Others made adjustments within the first two hitters. Then, it was up to the pitcher to adjust to that response. She who cannot adjust goes home.
-Your attitude is contagious, whether good or bad. Every person on both sides looks at one person every pitch, the pitcher. You are feeding one team or the other every inning, every pitch.
-70 is the new 65. If you want to be taken seriously, coaches are looking at that radar. Force the hitter to make quick decisions, then have to off-speed and movement to make them regret it. Hitters are so good, analytics are so good, that you cannot give them time to analyze.
-Following up on the previous point, you must be all around the zone, but not in the zone very often. You must force the hitter to swing at things she does not want with that ever-present threat that you may get the called strike if she passes.
-Pitches in the middle of the zone find the outfield bleachers.
-Heart, grit, fight. Over-coached pitchers never find that. Stop looking at coach, mommy or daddy, and take charge. The other team is always trying to create doubt in you. Refuse to participate.
-We saw a big trend toward more fluid movements and less wasted energy. Everything that does not contribute to the efficiency of the pitch is generally eliminated.
-Dominance in the whole zone. Even drop pitchers have to be able to surprise the best hitters with a rise, to be able to locate their best pitch in multiple zones. Most hitters have one weak spot, they know it well, and they can defend it well unless you have something special you can put into that spot.
-Team, Team, Team, Team. The best players perform over their head because of their selfless devotion to the team. Coaches want this, crave this. Constantly jumping travel teams would make me nervous.
-Finally, hopefully, the NCAA learned that they were setting a terrible example by playing games into the morning hours and asking the same teams to come back the next day. College coaches complain that kids play way too much, but then they are stuck in a system where you play until you drop. A lot of alarm bells sounded this World Series. Let’s hope they, and you, listen.
