Woohooo some important and exciting announcements
Some info
This is going super fast. Second dose begin yesterday. If anyone got vaccinated in March can book there second dose now.
Update from Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw:
With cases declining, starting today we can again start screening all positive tests for variants of concern. This will help track & limit spread as we move towards reopening. Please get tested if you have COVID-19 symptoms or are a close contact.
Over the last 24 hours, we ID’d 209 new cases & completed about 4.1K tests. Our positivity rate is 5.1%. There are now active alerts/outbreaks in 417 schools, or 17% of all schools in Alberta. There are 438 people in hospital, including 127 in ICU.
Sadly, 1 new death was reported in the last 24 hrs. My condolences go to the family & friends of this individual & to anyone who has had to say goodbye to someone they cared about. One of the best ways we can avoid future deaths from this virus, is to get vaccinated.
Vaccine uptake has had a substantial impact on reducing the spread of COVID-19 in Alberta. If you are unsure about getting a 1st dose, please remember: every protected person will help us prevent future waves. These vaccines are safe & they will protect you & those around you.
I strongly urge everyone to book their 2nd dose appointment as soon as they are eligible. 1st doses offer good protection, but 2 doses offer a significantly higher & longer level of immunity, particularly against emerging variants like the B.1.617.
While we will give the same vaccine for 1st & 2nd doses for the most part, NACI has advised that mRNA vaccines can be used interchangeably for 2nd doses. No matter what vaccine you received for 1st dose, we will have a 2nd available for you.
If you have received AstraZeneca for a 1st dose, you can choose AZ or an mRNA vaccine for your 2nd dose. Both are good vaccines. Albertans who receive AZ should know the risk of VITT is extremely rare. In the UK, among 9 million AZ 2nd doses, only 15 VITT cases were reported.
Based on the UK trial, people who receive Pfizer after AZ may have more general reactions, including fever and aches. Most symptoms happened within 2 days & went away on their own. If you are not sure what option is best for you, please consider talking to a healthcare professional.
Both choices are valid & both will give you better protection against COVID-19.The key is to sign up for both first and second doses. They are the best way to protect yourself, your friends and family, and the community around you.

Alberta’s Open for Summer plan provides a three-stage road map to lifting health restrictions and safely getting back to normal, as long as public health measures are followed in the short term and vaccination numbers continue to rise.
The plan is based on vaccination thresholds and hospitalization. Public health restrictions will be lifted at each stage:
➡️ Stage 1: two weeks after 50% of Albertans 12+ received at least one dose and hospitalizations are below 800 and declining
➡️ Stage 2: two weeks after 60% of Albertans 12+ have received at least one dose and hospitalizations are below 500 and declining
➡️ Stage 3: two weeks after 70% of Albertans 12+ have received at least one dose
Alberta will enter Stage 1 on June 1, having reached the 50% threshold on May 18. The province is projected to enter Stage 2 in mid-June and Stage 3 in late-June or early July.
These are estimates only and rely on all Albertans continuing to drive down our hospitalizations while increasing vaccination numbers. Provincial COVID-19 restrictions will continue to be monitored throughout the re-opening.
