Very grateful to announce I am continuing my sponsorship with Kistler Rods. I have worked on repping the company to the best of my ability and have been promoted to the state team level of their program. Hopefully I will continue to move forward and progress thru their program.

Another top 20 finish in the Bassmaster opens series with a big comeback today to finish 17th out of 77 coanglers on a very tough lake eufala in Oklahoma. Day 1 I caught a lot of fish just no size with only 1 keeper and probably 40-50 short fish. Day 2 I caught 10 fish but had 3 solid keepers one going close to 3lbs. I caught my fish this week on a variety of baits. Day 1’s keeper was on a chug bug. Day 2 keepers were on a jackall jerkbait, and dirty jigs finesse jigs with a Swampro Lures coffin cutter for my trailer. I caught several fish on crankbaits, chatterbaits, and other swampro plastics. Special thanks to the amazing team of sponsors who help me along the way.

Had a bittersweet day in the open today. Jumped off a solid 4-5lb fish this morning and another one about 3-4 on topwater that would have went a long way. Had a dead fish that cost me 4oz but still managed to finish the day in 15th due to tiebreakers. Can’t complain on to the next one. I’ll be hitting the road back to Texas today.

Unpopular opinion…. Per the TPWD regulations and rulebook livescope should already be illegal

Under the unlawful activities it is unlawful to:

“use any vessel to harry, herd or drive fish including, but not limited to, operating any vessel in a repeated circular course, for the purpose of or resulting in the concentration of fish for the purpose of taking or attempting to take fish.”

Chasing fish with livescope is literally the definition of this rule

Had a blast fishing the ABA AFT tournament on Lake Texoma today. Came in 1 shy of a limit and it ultimately cost me a check. The big smallie came on a Junebug red hogwash from Swampro Lures paired up with a Vector Hooks 3/0 EWG on a Kistler Rods chromium rod and a chromium reel

Been working on getting the champion cleaned up, slow and steady wins the race with this one… still have a long ways to go but it’s cleaning up really nicely

Going to p**s a bunch of people off with this one… I use social media as my platform for fishing and to keep up with friends and family.

Forward facing sonar(ffs) is the participation trophy in the fishing world, and is detrimental to all fisheries. Those who support ffs is looking at everything with rose colored blinders on because it is enabling them to catch fish they didn’t know where there before. They refuse to look at the long term effects of this technology. We have more anglers today than we did 20 years ago, now give them all, those with more money than sense, the ability to literally go chase fish down they see on a 10-16in screen until they bite. We no longer see anglers having bad days or actually having to learn how to fish, as they simply put on the closest lure that resembles a minnow and throws it in front of a fish until they bite. Now add in the fact that most of these fish are being caught at depths where they need to be degassed/burped/fizzed aka deflating the air bladder so they can swim properly. Majority of todays anglers do not know how to do this or flat don’t care when they catch a non target species meaning they are causing a high mortality rate amongst fish. Add in the fact that this technology no longer allows fish to have a place to hide. Without the ability to hide baitfish are being caught at a record pace which in turn results in larger predator fish not having the food supply needed to sustain growth. Think about it like a small farm pond that you never keep anything from because the kids like catching 50 fish a day but none of them are ever over 1lb because they are all competing over a very limited food supply. Eventually these fisheries across the nation will be the same as the farm pond if left unchecked. Overfishing/overharvesting of any resource is detrimental to the well being of the ecosystem no matter the size.

Those that do not fish but hunt or play video games let me explain how it works in a different way. FFS is essentially the same as using thermal imaging when hunting or playing call of duty etc. You use a transducer that attaches to the trolling motor or off the side of the boat and you scan for moving targets putting off a specific signature just like they do with a thermal scope. Once the fish is found thru this imaging anglers are throwing at said fish until it bites or they chase it down and more less force feed it. This sonar works exceptionally well in any water condition and makes hiding virtually impossible.

At the end of the day my primary goal is to make sure my kids, eventual grandkids and eventual great grandkids etc have a resource they can pursue if they so choose and have fun doing it

Day 2 of lake Ouachita in Arkansas was the worst day of fishing I have ever had in my entire life. I have had bad days for sure whether it’s been fish hooks going under my knee cap or slipping on the rocks and getting sliced to shreds by barnacles…. However I have never in my 30+ year of fishing ever fished an entire 10-11hour day without a single bite regardless of the conditions. You can’t do anything about small fish or wrong species etc but not even getting a bite makes it rough for sure. Unfortunately this is going to be the norm for several coanglers with forward facing sonar taking over everything. What’s worse is we all know nothing will change with ffs until someone not paying attention causes a major boating accident. Mr Aoki was a younger kid, I say kid because I have a son almost the same age so he’s a kid to me, was very nice and apologetic about the way he was fishing. I have no ill will against those using livescope, however it is essentially the same as spotlighting animals imho and here’s why. When you spot light animals you are using a beam of light to find an animal and either shooting or chasing the animal until it stops to make a shot. With ffs you are using a rf beam to locate the fish and chasing them down until they stop for you to continuously put a bait in their face until they eat or get foul hooked. Due to many people not knowing or caring to take care of deep water fish is also going to make the mortality rates go up much higher. This is due to people not properly venting fish, or just throwing them back after bringing them up from 20+ feet because they weren’t the right species or too small. IMHO this is very unethical and a detriment to the fisheries as a whole. I will continue to do my best to be competitive in these events but I am going to have to reconsider my future as a competitive Coangler going forward if this is the way the sport is headed. Ultimately I am going to these tournaments to have a good time, be competitive, and attempt to win some money, I honestly can’t say I’m competitive when stuck to fishing zero structure areas while someone chases down fish at 2-4mph on the trolling motor giving me less than 50-60 total casts that I actually get to work a bait properly.

Thank you to every that has supported me over the years to include all my family and friends and sponsors.

Day number 2 of the Bassmaster open on lake Ouachita in Arkansas. Boat number 196 today so I’ll be one of the very last anglers to weigh in. Check in at 5:35 probably be weighing in around 5:50-6pm cst. Drew Yui Aoki today so have a language barrier which will make things interesting. Sitting in 40th after day number 1, with most everyone livescoping it’s tough to get bit from the back of the boat.

Want to thank all my sponsors and most importantly my wonderful wife Carrie Clayton for their support in fishing these events

2024 St. Croix Bassmaster Open at Lake Okeechobee presented by SEVIIN - Bassmaster 02/02/2024

Here we go for day number 2 of the Bassmaster open on Lake Okeechobee in Florida. Never thought I would be finesse fishing down here in order to get bites but that’s how the day went yesterday. Was a slow day 1 with only boating 4 fish. Going for another 3 fish limit today with some better size to move up the leaderboard. Sitting in 49th place with 5lbs 2oz after day number 1. Yesterday I fished around no less than 50 boats all day.

Special thanks to all my wonderful sponsors and my amazing wife Carrie Clayton for supporting me in this journey to chase my dreams.

I’ve been away for a bit and haven’t fished as much these last few years. 2024 season will be completely different. I qualified to fish the ABA Ray Scott national championship at lake Chickamauga in Tennessee in April. I am also back to fishing the Bassmaster Opens in huge thanks to a great friend who put in a good word for me with Toyota trucks for a sponsorship to fish the Opens. Needless to say I graciously accepted the opportunity to represent Toyota in the Bassmaster Opens as a Coangler.

Planning on fishing the 3 northern opens as well but it depends on how the first 2 events at Okeechobee and Ouchita goes.
