Personal trainers must understand the basics of overcompensation, as illustrated in this graph. It explains the body’s adaptation process following a workout:
1. Stimulus: Training temporarily reduces performance (post-workout exhaustion) depending on intensity and volume.
2. Recovery: Over 24-72 hours, the body repairs itself, with recovery quality and nutrition being crucial.
3. Overcompensation: The body adapts by exceeding its initial fitness level, improving conditioning.
4. Involution: Without frequent stimuli, fitness regresses to baseline or lower.
This cycle highlights the importance of balancing training, recovery, and consistency to optimize results.
