Sharing one of so many examples of women being there for women to celebrate International Women’s Day! 💕
At 75, Robyn Yerian did what most people wouldn’t dare. She took $150,000 from her retirement, bought five acres outside Cumby, Texas — empty land with no water, no electricity, no buildings — and dared to dream.
The dream? A place where older women could live with dignity, connection, and safety. A place that wasn’t a nursing home or a lonely apartment, but a small, self-sustaining community built for friendship and independence.
Robyn had learned from experience. She’d lived in a tiny-home village, studied what made communities thrive, and realized most women faced growing older alone, financially strained, and socially isolated. She refused to accept that future for anyone.
She built fourteen concrete pads with utilities. She moved her tiny home onto the land. She opened the gates — but only for women who shared her vision of respect, honesty, and mutual care.
The first night a group of women gathered around the fire pit, the conversation turned quietly serious. Loneliness. Divorce. Widowhood. Medical bills. Invisible decades. One woman finally asked: “What if this place were just for women?”
That question became the soul of The Bird’s Nest.
Today, eleven women live there, ranging from their thirties to late seventies. They share meals, drive each other to appointments, tend gardens, walk dogs, teach each other skills, and celebrate birthdays. The fire pit is the heart of the place, where stories are exchanged and laughter echoes under the Texas sky.
Robyn never raised rent. She never compromised on safety. She never allowed drama. She simply provided stability, respect, and a chance to age in community rather than isolation.
Statistics make the urgency clear: millions of older women live alone, many with less than $50,000 saved. Loneliness shortens life, erodes health, and deepens isolation. But here, in five acres of Texas dirt, women age with freedom, friendship, and dignity.
Robyn’s tiny-home village isn’t about wealth. It’s about life. It’s about refusing to let society make you invisible. It’s about building a place where growing older is not a sentence — it’s a choice to thrive.
Because sometimes, the boldest thing a person can do with retirement savings isn’t buy security — it’s build a home for the human heart.
