Ghana Olympic Committee Pays Tribute to Departed Compatriots
The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) on Monday laid wreath at the Jubilee House to honor the memory of the compatriots who tragically lost their lives in an incident at Adansi in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
The wreaths, representing the GOC, the Commonwealth Games Association of Ghana, and the entire sporting fraternity.
The GOC President, Mr. Richard Akpokavie remarked that "The Ghana Olympic Committee, representing all national federations, athletes, coaches, and officials in sports, and has come to pay tribute to these gallant men who died in the service of our country."
He revealed that the late Omane Boamah was scheduled as a baton bearer for the King's Baton Relay which has been put on hold.
He added, "We remember them for their service to the nation, and it's fitting that we come here to pay our respects. As sports people, we believe in sacrifice for our country, and we're committed to instilling this value in our athletes, officials, and coaches. May God remember them for their service and rest their souls in peace."
The ceremony was attended by top officials of the GOC, including President Richard Akpokavie, 1st Vice President Mawuko Afadzinu, 2nd Vice President Frederick Otu Lartey, Secretary General Muniru Kassim Mohammed, Deputy Secretary General Bawah Fuseini, and board members Rafatu Inusah, Delphina Quaye, George Lamptey, George Tettey Lamptey, Kamal Sulley, Richmond Quarcoo, and Nathaniel Johnson.
Other notable attendees included Professor Francis Dodoo, Former GOC President; Charles Osei Asibey, Communications Director, GOC; and Christopher Essilfie, President for Modern Pentathlon.

Richard Akpokavie Esq. takes charge of GOC after landmark smooth handover
A new chapter has begun for Ghana’s Olympic movement, as the immediate past President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Ben Nunoo Mensah, officially handed over the reins of leadership to his successor, Richard Akpokavie, at a symbolic ceremony held on Tuesday at the GOC headquarters (Olympic House) at Ridge, Accra.
The handover, which included the presentation of official documents, office keys, and unused sporting kits from Ghana’s 2021 Olympic and 2022 Commonwealth Games campaigns, marked the final step in a smooth and orderly transition of power.
It followed Mr Akpokavie’s emphatic victory at the recent GOC Congress in Accra, setting the stage for a new era of visionary leadership rooted in grassroots development and athlete empowerment.
“This is a new chapter for the Olympic movement in Ghana,” Mr Akpokavie declared, who finally ascended to the top post after an unsuccessful attempt four years ago.
Unity and hard work
He said for the new leadership to succeed would require unity of purpose from the GOC board, the federations, and the media to work towards making the GOC an engine for the transformation of Ghanaian sports for excellence at the international level.
Mr Nunoo Mensah, who completed two terms spanning eight years, urged his successor to consolidate the gains made under his administration.
He emphasised the need to complete key legacy projects, particularly the OlympAfrica Juvenile Sports Excellence Centre at Amasaman.
In a show of accountability, outgoing GOC Treasurer, Frederick Acheampong, handed over all financial records and assets to the newly elected Treasurer, Evans Yeboah.
Newly appointed GOC Secretary-General, Mohammed Muniru, also paid tribute to Mr Nunoo Mensah’s impactful leadership and reaffirmed that the door remained open for the former president to offer his guidance and experience.
The ceremony was attended by a cross-section of GOC board members, including the First Vice-President, Mawuko Afadzinu; the Third Vice-President, Ernest Danso; the Deputy Secretary-General, Bawa Fuseini; the Assistant Treasurer, Nii Lante Bannerman; Kamal Sulley, and former Assistant Treasurer, Isaac Duah.

Ghana Olympic Committee / Commonwealth Games Federation Ghana delivers smooth and controversy free Extra Ordinary Congress
The Extra Ordinary Assembly of the Ghana Olympic Committee held on Saturday April 12 at the Accra International Conference Centre ended on a smooth and credible note as the administration of President Ben Nunoo Mensah demonstrated transparency, accountability and fairness to the admiration of all delegates.
The delegates could not help but give resounding applause after Treasurer Frederick Acheampong had delivered the statement of accounts for the 2023 2024 financial years.
Deputy Treasurer Isaac Aboagye Duah also presented the budget for the year 2025 to an overwhelming approval from the delegates.
"For the first time in the history of the GOC congresses, accounts were presented without any faults or fights." said Samuel Ayeh (Jollof), a former athlete. coach and represented of the Security Services.
However, Bawa Fuseini, representing Ghana Athletics, called for consistency, while Christen Ashiley, representing Ghana Canoeing and Rowing requested for a uniform support to the National Federations in the payment of their affiliation fees to their IFs.
Mr. Charles Asare of Ghana Cricket commended Congress for having one of the best, smooth and controversy-free meetings with no hot debates and drills.
Mr. Yakubu Abdul Razak aka 'Commando' represting Ghana Kickboxing Association congratulated the board for their excellent service. He said the President led the GOC very well in the last eight years and urged his successor to improve upon the sound foundation as well the prudent and transparent financial management carried out by the out-going President.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Ben Nunoo Mensah who is also known as HRH Nii Kojo Ashiefie Papanyira 1, Development Chief of the Ga State lauded delegates for the trust and confidence they had in the board which has resulted in many achievements and prayed that the legacies would be improved.
As the GOC goes for an Elective Congress on April 26, 2025, he wished all the candidates well and advised the delegates to vote for individuals based on their credibility, integrity, selflessness as well as their records and achievements to ensure that the good brand and image of the GOC/CGA is maintained at all times.
He thanked all who supported him and the board over the past eight years including sponsors. the media, sports enthusiasts, and discerning Ghanaians, and charge the incoming board to ensure that the over 500,000 USD savings accrued is invested into the OlympAfrica Juvenile Sports Excellence Centre at Amasaman, as he had intended.

GOC President Ben Nunoo Mensah ‘will not contest’ in April’s Elective Congress
Ghana Olympic Committee President, Ben Nunoo Mensah, has opted against seeking re-election at next month’s GOC elections.
The 61-year-old business man has already served two terms in office, having first been elected in 2017, and supervised the country’s participation at the Tokyo and Paris Olympic Games.
In a statement released, Nunoo Mensah explained that he has made the decision to move on to other endeavors.
"I wish to confirm that while it would have been an honour to continue serving my nation and
the sports community in this capacity, there is a greater call to serve humanity in a different and equally fulfilling way. I accordingly want to move on and will not contest in the upcoming GOC elections.
"I understand this decision may disappoint the many individuals and federations who have
encouraged me to continue for another and final four-year term.
"I sincerely appreciate their support and confidence in my leadership. However, I trust they will also understand that, there comes a time when one must move on, and for me, that time is now."
The GOC elections have been fixed for April 26, with former General Secretary of the committee, Richard Akpokavi, having already declared his intention to contest for the presidency.

Commonwealth Games Federation President Calls On Ga Traditional Council
Dr. Chris Jenkins OBE, President of the Commonwealth Games Federation who is in Accra, Ghana for the 13th African Games on Monday paid a courtesy call on the Ga Mantse, Nii Tackie Teiko Truru II.
He was received and welcomed by the Abola Manste, Nii Ahene Nunoo III, Akanmajen Manste, Nii Ayi Kai III, the Nai Wulomo, Chief Priest and other elders in the absence of the Ga Mantse.
Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah, President of the Commonwealth Games Ghana (CGA) led the Commonwealth Games delegation which included CEO of CGF Madam Katie Sadleir, Vice President of CGF, Col. Botsang Tshenyego, , President of Commonwealth Games Namibia and Ezera Tshabangu, Regional Development Manager, Africa & Europe.
Mr. Nunoo Mensah said as custom demands and a show of respect, they have to meet the elders of the land of Accra, the capital city of Ghana.
Dr. Jenkins called for peace and unity among Commonwealth nations and creation of opportunities for every country to change the mindset and encourage development.
He said the historic visit has been positive and worthwhile because he held very important meetings and strategic workshop with CGF members in Africa and board of Commonwealth Games Association of Ghana.
The Abola Mantse who is Chief Counsel of the Ga Manste appealed to the CGF to consider Ghana to host the first Commonwealth Games in Africa. He expressed that sports creates development and international games break racism.
"Let's use sports to unite the world" he expressed.
He also urged the CGF and members of the Commonwealth to vote for Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchway who is vying for the Secretary General position in the Commonwealth.
The Nai Wulomo, Chief Priest, Nuumo Always Mensah III poured libation and prayed for the CGF and peace in the world at large as well as the CGA leadership and decorated the CGF delegation with Hyssop which has spiritual powers for humans.
The elders of the Ga state presented Dr. Jenkins with a carving symbolising unity, while he reciprocate d with a special Commonwealth Timer to the Council. It was received by Nii Ayikai III.

Trinbago 2023 begins with spectacular opening ceremony
The 7th Commonwealth Youth Games and the first in the Caribbean kicked off in a carnival style at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Trinidad.
In a ceremony bursting with colour and energy, more than 1,000 athletes from around 70 Commonwealth Nations and Territories were welcomed to the first Youth Games since 2017.
Famous for their appearance at Carnival time, the Klddies Carnival Kings and Queens performed alongside a youth steel pan side, while spectators enjoyed tassa and tamboo bamboo stands within the stadium.
Following the traditional parade of nations, there was a demonstration of the sports being played during the Games. Each sport was represented by an incredible Moko Jumbie, designed to not only glisten in the sunlight, but also show movement similar to the sport.
Dame Louise Martin, President of the Commonwealth Games told athletes in her opening address: “I truly hope you seize the moment and enjoy this Caribbean carnival of inspiring competition, personal development and global friendship.”
“You are diverse, unique and equal members of one big sporting family and especially in this Commonwealth Year of Youth – we will celebrate each and every one of you.”
Closing the festivities Trinidad and Tobago-born group, Freetown Collective performed the theme song ‘Stay Ready’ created especially for the Youth Games.
Diane Henderson, President of the Trinidad and Tobago Commonwealth Games Association (TTCGA), and the local Organising Committee, said: “What you saw today is a combined volunteer effort led by us here in Trinidad and Tobago and aided by persons from around the world.”
“I think as a nation, we can stand up and say proudly we are Trinbago 2023. Now, the work really begins as the real stars of the show take to the field over the next few days.”
From 4-11 August athletes will participate in Aquatics (Swimming), Athletics, Cycling (Road Race, Time Trial, and Track) and Triathlon, as well as Rugby Sevens and Beach Volleyball.
Netball’s shorter, faster format, FAST5, makes its debut at the Youth Games with eight women’s teams competing for a medal.
A fully integrated Para-Athletics programme will also make its first appearance at the Games with athletes competing in six medal events (three women’s and three men’s events).
The Youth Games are an established pathway towards the Commonwealth Games, and other major senior sporting events, providing an opportunity to showcase the stars of the future.
