Every major decision I’ve made was determined while I was on the water. ❤️
_______________
Desolation Grey was my first whitewater rafting trip ever. I was 9 years old. On the last night, we slept on a beach just downstream of Coal Creek Rapid and I saw the most magnificent comet I’ve ever seen streak across the sliver of sky visible between the canyon walls.
In 2013 I went back to Deso Grey on a stand up paddleboard. It was my first time running class III’s on a SUP and the first trip I ever led. I moved to Colorado shortly afterward and pursued competitive whitewater SUP.
This year, Brad won the Deso permit. It was his first time leading a trip. We had 7 of our closest friends join us. For some, it was their first time on class III rapids, and for others, it was their first multi-day river trip ever.
On the last night, all of us soaked in the final hours of our amazing trip on a beach just below Coal Creek Rapid, under the same sky I watched 20 years ago. We dipped in the river with drinks in our hand and bellies sore from laughing.
As the sun dropped below the canyon walls, we hiked upstream and swam a small riffle with our arms linked together. When we climbed back on the beach, we spontaneously de-rigged the raft and turned it into a slip and slide.
After we calibrated the slip and slide and the group successfully launched me into the air, I walked back to the beach and saw on one knee. Our entire group went silent as Brad asked me to marry him with tears in his eyes.
Who knew that 20 years ago, as 9 year-old Cami sat on a beach watching a comet go by that that moment would be so pivotal in my life. It sparked my love for the river and the river is what led Brad and I to cross paths 6 years ago at a SUP race in Moab, Utah.
Brad is the yin to my yang and the flow to my fire. I’m so excited to plan the rest of our lives together! 🖤

“Look where you want to go.”
Every sport I do utilizes this principle and it was on my mind a lot as I navigated a river for the last seven days. I tend to go toward where ever my focus is.
Looking where you want to go can also manifest some pretty great things in life!

Here are some GoPro screenshots from paddling 77 miles of river in Idaho with good some Colorado river friends, , and our Lola-pup! 👀 Look for the burning log pic—we paddled alongside remnants of a wildfire!

Our dry winter resulted in a pretty short to nonexistent river season out here. Fortunately, low flow, slow, and rock-dodging is still pretty fun!
