Week 20 Men's Club Rankings
Finals time are a completely different beast and after months of dominance, #2 Footscray Lacrosse Club certainly learned that lesson the hard way, losing their first game of the year to a dogged #3 Camberwell Lacrosse Club 14 - 11 in the major semi final. That loss saw the Bulldogs lose top spot for the first time in months, but the committee has given the Bulldogs some credit for their undefeated regular season, only dropping the Bulldogs one spot. An argument can be made for Camberwell to have gone ahead, but we can't forget that Footscray still lead the season series 2 - 1 and they did finish the regular season 3 games clear.
Footscray's loss however was not without consequence, as Australia's other 1 loss team #1 East Fremantle Lacrosse Club have taken the top spot for the first time. The Blues certainly did it the hard way though, needing to grind out a thrilling 1 goal win over #7 Wembley Lacrosse Club to progress to the Lacrosse WA grand final. The Wolves certainly put in a terrific performance and that was recognised when they only dropped a spot.
#4 Glenelg Lacrosse Club made a case that they should be rated higher, after a thumping win over #9 Brighton Lacrosse club 18 - 7. The Seahawks were ruthless from the start, taking it to a disappointing Bomber's outfit who will now be forced to back up against a resurgent Redwings outfit. The Bombers flat performance has seen them drop 2 spots.
#6 East Torrens Payneham Lacrosse Club cemented their status as one of the hottest teams in the country using a strong second half to brush past Burnside Lacrosse Club 11 - 7. The Redwings have now beaten all of the contenders in consecutive weeks and will almost head into the prelim favourites. Burnside meanwhile have gone from challenging for the minor premiership to out in the first week over 2 games. The Bears had a great regular season but would have to be disappointed with the way it finished. Those losses, which came in incredibly significant games, pushed Burnside out of the top 10.
#8 Bayswater Lacrosse Club have dug deep to pull out a thrilling 1 goal win over Wanneroo Joondalup Lacrosse Club 11 - 10 to progress to the preliminary finals. Bayswater started hot but had to withstand a fierce fightback to prevail. That win sees them back in the top 10 this week.
#5 Williamstown Lacrosse Club have sent shudders through the Lacrosse Victoria with yet another clinical finals performance, overrunning #10 Surrey Park Lacrosse Club 13 - 6 to hold onto the 5 spot, while Surrey just managed to hold on the final spot, edging Wanneroo Joondalup Lacrosse Club, who struggled all year, and Burnside Lacrosse Club who finished the season with two disappointing losses.
Week 20 Women's Club Rankings
The Finals are here and whilst thee weren't any monumental upsets, there were some interesting results, particularly out West.
#1 Footscray Lacrosse Club have enjoyed the fruits of being the number 1 team in the land and were able to kick back their heels and relax in the knowledge that their Grand Final berth was confirmed when the Lacrosse Victorian State League was reduced to three teams.
There they will face #3 Newport Ladies Lacrosse Club who took care of Caulfield Lacrosse Club 10 - 1 to progress to their 44th (!!!) consecutive grand final.
In Lacrosse SA, #2 Glenelg Lacrosse Club used a blistering 8 - 2 third quarter to turn a 1 goal half time deficit into a comfortable 6 goal win over #4 Brighton Lacrosse club, keeping the top 4 the same for another week.
In the minor semi final, #7 Woodville Lacrosse Club fought off a fiesty #9 Burnside Lacrosse Club to prevail 17 - 14 in a high scoring affair which saw neither side move.
In Lacrosse WA, it was upsets a plenty. #5 East Fremantle Lacrosse Club continued their finals dominance over Wembley with a thrilling 11 - 10 overtime win, inflicting on #6 Wembley Lacrosse Club their 4th straight finals loss. That necessitated a swap in the rankings with the Blues going to 5 and Wembley dropping to 6.
In the minor semi final, #8 Wanneroo Joondalup Lacrosse Club threw out the form guide, arresting their slide and whilst halting #8 Union's rise with a resounding 15 - 8 win in the semi-final, showing that the Chiefs are certainly finals hardened. The pushed the Chiefs back to number 8, whilst #10 Union pipped Caulfield for the last spot.
Lacrosse SA is pleased to announce Bank SA as the naming sponsor of the Mens State League Grand Final. Congratulations to Glenelg Lacrosse Club Mens State League Team who qualified for the Grand Final at Coopers Stadium on 16th September 2017.

Major Semi Final (1 v 2)
#4 Glenelg Lacrosse Club v #7 Brighton Lacrosse club
2.50pm, Saturday, 2 September 2017
Findon Oval
Perennial powerhouses Glenelg and Brighton square off yet again in the 2017 Major Semi Final. After splitting their season series, Glenelg will be looking to reverse last year's loss to the Bombers and clinch a spot in this year's grand final, with the loser set for a tough preliminary final.
Season Series
Brighton 9 def Glenelg 6
Glenelg 14 def Brighton 12 (OT)
Players to watch
Glenelg - Todd Bartlett. The 2017 Roo has been a revelation in 2017. Despite missing time while in Korea, Bartlett has amassed 41 goals this season and has thrown a number of bags. Unsurprisingly, when Bartlett gets going, so do Glenelg. His 6 goals performance the last time these sides met included 4 goals in the last quarter and overtime showing his match winning potential. Bartlett has the ability to be the difference between these two sides in 2017.
Brighton - Clint Barker. The 2018 Australian squad member has shown a real appetite for the big games over the past 12 months. He was lights out during the 2016 finals series, backed it up with an All-star performance at the Nationals and then was in great touch at the Maverik Challenge. Goalkeepers win premierships and the Bombers have one here who has proven he can do just that.
Expert Take with Anonymous
Glenelg - In my opinion Glenelg is the most balanced of the top 4 sides across the field as they don’t rely on 1 or 2 players to dominate. Their game plan is well thought out so anyone in their offensive half can be a threat. They are very strong in face off, with both Dan Evans and Luke Keesing. Offensively, they will play a slow and deliberate game, lulling the defense into a sense that they’ve got you covered, working the ball around until they see an opening. Brighton will need to be disciplined in their communication and recover quickly from unsettled play. It’s a simple offense they run – dodge, rollback, pass, pass, dodge, but they are very disciplined in their approach to it, and skilful enough to pull it off. Their defense hasn’t played a lot of lacrosse together, so there may be an opportunity to exploit a lack of understanding between them.
Brighton - Probably have more top end talent then the other 3 teams, although the younger members of their team can’t be underestimated. If they’re left alone, they can hurt opposition sides. Offensively, Leigh Perham, Anson Carter and co. can still ping the corners from anywhere when they get time and room. Glenelg may get their chance on the second string midfield and need to take advantage of their younger short stick middies in defense, as they aren’t big bodies. Getting past Clint Barker in goals is always a difficult task but locking down on Matt Fuss when Brighton are clearing the ball is going to be a must for Glenelg.
Prediction - This is one of the more difficult games of the weekend to pick given the up and down nature of the 2017 Lacrosse SA season. Glenelg have plenty of talent across the board but Brighton have proven matchwinners. This will make for an interesting contrast of styles but at this stage we are giving the nod to finals experience, and we think that may get Brighton over the line. Brighton 11 Glenelg 10.
Minor Semi Final (3 v 4)
#9 Burnside Lacrosse Club v #8 East Torrens Payneham Lacrosse Club
2.50pm, Saturday, 2 September 2017
Findon Oval
Reeling from their disappointing loss to Brighton a week ago, the Bears don't have long to ponder as they take on a resurgent Redwings side looking to make a repeat run at a grand final berth.
Season Series
Burnside 11 def East Torrens Payneham 8
Burnside 8 def East Torrens Payneham 4
Players to Watch
Burnside - Alex Dietsch. With the faceoff seen as the potential achilles heel for the Bears (Lacrosse SA TV had then ranked fourth), a stand out finals series from Dietsch in the middle could put the Bears front and centre for a premiership run. Their offence is good enough to score and their defence is elite, so dominating the middle is really important particularly in a matchup this weekend where the middle is up for grounds. If keepers can win you flags, X-men, would be a very close second in that equation.
East Torrens Payneham - Conor Healey. You know what you are going to get with ETP in that goals are not going to come easy. The challenge for ETP though is hitting the back of the net, and to that end, Healey is going to be the key. The Saint Lawrence All- American has been a key to the Redwings recent resurgence including a 4 goal game in their upset over Brighton. He was only held to 1 goal against Burnside in their last loss though and ETP will need more out of him if they are to advance.
Expert Take with Anonymous
Burnside - They rely heavily on their highly regarded long pole defense brigade, 3 of whom are trying out for the Aussie team. Having said that, they are pretty handy all over the field. They rely on Kieran Sandow a fair bit in attack and he can at times be locked down. Burnside play a bit more of a box type game, drawing and dumping once defences have committed to a double. A lot of their attack is initiated from Kieren at X. If ETP can be disciplined enough to hold back their desire to double early, their offense can look a little impotent at times. Their long poles know they’re good, and back themselves one on one against most attackers. Although, their egos get the better of them occasionally, if they can be beaten the slides may not be there. For a strong defensive team, they can at times not play as a cohesive unit and this has been exploited at times throughout the season.
East Torrens Payneham - The introduction of their 2 yanks have been a massive boost for the Redwings. They can dominate a game on their own and with the likes of the locals like Ryan Gaspari feeding off them they can be dangerous. If Burnside can lock down on the yanks, it can really interrupt ETP’s ability to have meaningful attacks on goal. ETP can be exposed in defense as I believe their talent pool doesn’t run as deep as the other teams, so opposition teams need to be disciplined in attacking through the right options. Again, getting past Vickery in goals when he’s on his game is no mean feat. Shut him down early, verbally and on the scoreboard, and he’ll turn on his defense. Opposition sides will also get plenty of man up opportunities as I don’t think they are as disciplined as other top 4 teams.
ALN Prediction
Like the Major Semi Final, this game is going to be a barn burner with Burnside one of the seasons best sides, and ETP arguably the hottest. This will be a tough, tight affair with both defences expected to figure heavily. When picking this game though there are 2 factors that stand out. First, ETP is the hotter of the two sides having recently dispatched Glenelg and Brighton and second, Burnside weren't particularly impressive last week when they had everything to play for. The positive for Burnside is that they have owned ETP in 2017, however we think that changes in this one. ETP 9 Burnside 7

The defending champions, Brighton, take on 2017's juggernaut, Glenelg, for a spot in the finals. The Seahawks have been nearly untouchable when they have had their full team on the park, but Brighton will be looking to capture some of 2016's mojo as they look to spring an upset.
Season Series
Glenelg 19 def Brighton 4
Glenelg 20 def Brighton 5
Brighton 8 def Glenelg 7
Glenelg 18 def Brighton 5
Players to watch
Glenelg - Karen Mortimer. The 2015 Shelley Maher winner has proven to be a welcome sight for the Seahawks in 2017. Mortimer has been a picture of consistency for Glenelg in a World Cup year which has seen her score at least 2 goals in every game she has played. Perhaps more telling though was the 7 goals she hung on the Bombers the last time they met a fortnight ago. Mortimer is a very important cog in the Glenelg machine and if she is allowed to have her usual impact on this one, Brighton are going to struggle.
Brightono - Taylor Caldwell. The Loyola keeper will have her work cut out for her in this one and will need to be at the top of her game. The Seahawks are going to get their shots but a goalkeeper can turn a game on its head with a standout performance, and you get the feeling that anything less then a stellar performance by Caldwell, will make things tough for Brighton.
Expert Take with Anonymous
Glenelg - Glenelg have been on another level this season and have demonstrated a knack for going to another level when they take on Brighton this season. The task for Glenelg is really simple. Stick to their structures and dominate the midfield. If they can control they ball, then it will be really hard for Brighton to get into this game given the potency of Glenelg's offence.
Brighton - Control the tempo. Brighton can't allow Glenelg to control the speed of this game and they will need to play disciplined lacrosse by holding the ball for large periods of time. Glenelg will get their shots but if Brighton can rebuff those attempts early and then eat up large chunks of clock, taking their opportunities as and when they pop up, they can keep this game low scoring which will be a key.
Prediction - Brighton were the best team in the land in 2016 but the 2017 version of Glenelg has taken a leaf from that playbook and look to be playing at another level this year. They are stacked with Australian players, veteran leaders and young talent and that combination has made them almost invincible this year. Their 13 goal win over the Bombers only a fortnight ago was ominous and we expect that to continue. Glenelg 17 Brighton 6
Minor Semi Final (3 v 4)
#7 Woodville Lacrosse Club v #9 Burnside Lacrosse Club
6.30pm, Saturday, 2 September 2016

The Warriors look to cement their status as the third wheel in the big 3 when they look to keep their unbeaten run alive against a Burnside team out for revenge following their upset loss in the corresponding fixture last year.
Season Series
Woodville 11 def Burnside 8
Woodville 15 def Burnside 11
Woodville 12 def Burnside 9
Woodville 17 def Burnside 10
Players to Watch
Woodville - Olivia Parker. The up and coming Warrior has had a terrific 2017 campaign with 40 goals for Woodville. More importantly though 14 of them have come against a Burnside team that has struggled to contain her. Last time out, Parker put in arguably her best performance of the year, scoring 6 to pace the Warriors to their biggest win of the year against Burnside. Her offence provides a really nice compliment to Woodville stalward, Charlotte Whinnen and opens the game up for Woodville. If Parker can have the same sort of imfluence she has had all year, we like the chances of Woodville putting up a winning score.
Burnside - Sarah Lowe. Australian team member, Lowe's drive will be really important for Burnside as they look to take control in the midfield. Lowe has the ability to put away goals in buckets but it going to be her ability to win the ball in the middle that is going to trump anything she can do on the offensive end. Lowe is a tremendous athlete and if she can take control in the middle and contribute at the defensive end, then Burnside will be in with a chance.
Expert Take with Anonymous
Woodville - Draw controls are going to be the key for Woodville. Burnside have the offence to hurt you if they are given plenty of the ball, so a real key for the Warriors this week is going to be taking control of the ball in the middle and making sure they get on the board early, and in doing so, take Burnside's offence out of the game. It is something they have been able to do all year, so if they can do this again, they should progress.
Burnside - Burnside's defence is going to be really important in this game. They have shown the ability to put up scores that can keep them in the game against Woodville, but it has been their inability to limit Woodville's scoring that has hurt them. As a unit, they are going to need to be keeping Woodville to 10 or less if they want a chance at winning this game.
ALN Prediction
Woodville - Burnside has been one of the more compelling rivalries in South Australia over the last year. Starting in late 2016, the Warriors have held the edge of the Bears, but with the talent Burnside possesses, they are right in this one. In fact, with 3 of their 4 matchups this year being decided by 4 goals or less, we expect a close one, particularly if the Burnside defence can put in a big one. We are going to go against the trend here, but we think this one may be closer then expected. Woodville 12 Burnside 10
Final Men's Regular Season Club Rankings
With the regular season all done and dusted, the attention now turns to the finals, but not before Lacrosse SA through up one last twist in what was an incredible season.
The headliner was the huge matchup between #7 Brighton Lacrosse club and #9 Burnside Lacrosse Club with both sides playing for a double chance. It was Brighton however who arrested their recent form slump with a 14 - 8 win taking out every quarter in the process. That saw Burnside drop 4 spots to number 9 while Brighton rose 3. That left #5 Glenelg Lacrosse Club the big winner as 7 goals to Todd Barlett saw the Seahawks beat Woodville Lacrosse Club 21 - 8 to take outright top spot. Arguably the hottest side in SA, #8 East Torrens Payneham Lacrosse Club rose a sot despite having the bye.
In Lacrosse Victoria, we were treated to a finals preview, with this weekend's combatant's playing each other. #1 Footscray Lacrosse Club probably had the most to play for as they looked to seal an undefeated season. With history to play for the Bulldogs chipped away at #10 Surrey Park Lacrosse Club to eventually prevail 16 - 12, sealing the top spot for Footscray while Surrey Park dropped to number 10. The game of the day involved #3 Camberwell Lacrosse Club and #5 Williamstown Lacrosse Club. Early on, our decision to ranks the Chiefs ahead of the Fearon's looked the goods at Camberwell jumped to an 8 - 2 half time lead. But Williamstown made a go of it, clawing themselves all the way back to 9 all before a late surge got Camberwell home 11 - 10. That loss dropped Williamstown a spot.
With Lacrosse WA on bye #2 East Fremantle Lacrosse Club was unchanged, while results pushed #6 Wembley Lacrosse Club up to number 6.
Finally, a big congratulations to Lacrosse Sunshine Coast Queensland Australia who claimed the Queensland Lacrosse Association Inc State Championship with a win over the Brisbane Eagles Lacrosse.
Week 17 Mens Club Rankings
With 3 matches featuring top ten teams, there was bound to be some movement in this weeks rankings and the action sure didn't disappoint.
In what started as the match of the round, #1 Footscray Lacrosse Club showed why they are the team to beat in Lacrosse Victoria, routing an undermanned #6 Camberwell Lacrosse Club 18 - 7. Anthony Biscardi was on fire for the Bulldogs with 5 goals at they built a 15 - 2 three quarter time lead to never be challenged. That loss, the Chiefs 2nd loss in 4 games, sees them drop to #6.
In Lacrosse WA, #2 East Fremantle Lacrosse Club faced a danger game against #9 Wembley Lacrosse Club but came out of the gates flying, jumping to a 6 - 2 quarter time lead before holding on behind the stellar play of Ryan Spark to prevail 16 - 9.
In Lacrosse SA, the weekend started with a bang, with long time rivals #3 Glenelg Lacrosse Club coming from behind to beat #5 Brighton Lacrosse club in overtime 14 - 12. Todd Bartlett led the way with 6 goals for the Seahawks. That moved Glenelg up 2 spots while Brighton dropped 1. #7 Burnside Lacrosse Club kept the pressure on the league leaders with an easy win over Woodville Lacrosse Club 13 - 2 to stay at #7.
#4 Williamstown Lacrosse Club continued to show signs of life, recording their 4th win in a row by defeating an overpowered Caulfield Lacrosse Club 22 - 7 while #8 Surrey Park Lacrosse Club took full advantage of Wembley's loss, rising the #8 after a 15 - 5 win over Altona Lacrosse Club.
#10 Bayswater Lacrosse Club stayed at number 10 after their bye week but East Torrens Payneham Lacrosse Club and Wanneroo Joondalup Lacrosse Club continue to push for inclusion after registering wins at the weekend.

Lacrosse WA - Round 13
In a clash of the 2 hottest teams out West, East Fremantle used a 6 - 2 first quarter to get a buffer before a 4 - 1 third ultimately put them out far enough to keep Wembley at bay, securing the Minor Premiership for the Blues. Wembley fell to 3rd and will be hoping Bayswater Lacrosse Club drop one of their final 2 games if want to remain a chance at a top 2 finish. Wanneroo-Joondalup meanwhile beat a plucky Subiaco 10-9 to all but secure 4th spot. The win was not without controvesy though as a last quarter stick check prevented Subiaco from taking a late 2 goal lead before a late flurry from the Chiefs was enough to get them over the line.

MCC have played the role of spoiler to perfection, all but knocking Eltham out of the finals race with a 1 goal victory. That loss puts Eltham 3 games back of Surrey Park with 3 to play. Surrey, who beat Altona at the weekend, only need to win one of their last 3 games to set the top 4 in stone. Footscray continued their dream season with a dominating 18 - 7 win over an undermanned Camberwell in at top of the table clash which puts Footscray on the brink of the minor premiership, and Camberwell clinging to a second place, needing to win 2 of their last 3 to lock up a top 2 spot. The win puts Glenelg in a great spot to take the minor premiership with 2 games left to play, while Brighton's loss sets up a mouth watering clash with Burnside in the final round in a game which could decide the top 2. In the game of the round, Brighton hung on to beat Woodville by 1 to end the Warrior's chances of a top 2 finish. In a tight game, Woodville led by 1 at the first change but Brighton slowly got edged in front and managed to hold on to record a tight win and stay half a game back from Glenelg. In Wednesday's opener, Burnside fought off a valiant comeback from Wilderness to hang on for a thrilling 1 goal win. Megan Smith's 3 second quarter goals proved the difference as a 2-0 final term for Wildy wasn't enough. Surrey Park also benefited big from Eltham's demise as they took care of a Luke Dobson-less Moreland to put 2 games between them and Eltham for the last finals spot. Footscray ran their winning streak to 14 with a hard fought win over a plucky MCC, while Caulfield pulled off the upset of the round when Ray Vandegrift scored 8 goals to steer the 'Fielders to a 3 goal win over Malvern.
