The Vikings game was almost as exciting as the Spring Lake Park game.
Anyone else see some similarities between the 2015 State Championship run and the current Vikings?

STMA is Building the Wall to 6A

Many have asked the questions: What wall are we building, Where will it go? With what shall we build it? To answer these questions let us look back at the Qin, Han, Qi, Sui and Ming dynasties. I will attempt to construct a comparison that encapsulates the parallels between the building of the Great Wall of China and the building of the STMA Knights Dynasty into the new era of 6A Football.

Construction of the great wall began with the Qin dynasty (221–206 bc) against incursions by nomads from Inner Asia. Qin built these walls of rammed earth and stone.

The STMA Knights Dynasty began construction into the 3A State tournaments back in 1997 & 1999 https://youtu.be/uBTrsuhcCwU

Later China dynasties adopted different policies towards northern frontier defense. The Han(202 bc – 220 ad), the Northern Qi (550–574), the Sui (589–618), and particularly the Ming(1369–1644) were among those that rebuilt, re-manned, and expanded the Walls fortified with clay, stone & mortar.

Similar to the Han era that extended its fortifications further up and out; in 2001 the Knights moved up to the 4A State Tournament We would call this the Matt Spathe era. https://youtu.be/Xl2982ty_mw

Like onto the Qi & Sui dynasties who were among those that rebuilt and re-manned, the Wall, our Knights go back to back with State appearances in 4A Football 2007 & 2008. http://www.minnesota-scores.net/teamschedule.php?yid=0809&sport=104&tid=1560

Sui mobilized over a million men in their wall-building efforts. So too as STMA enrolment grew to astonishing heights. The Knights begin a siege to conquer the class 5A; attending the State Tournament in 2013, 2014 & capture the State Prep Bowl title defeating all State 5A participants in 2015. https://youtu.be/9UXUjCmhKB8

The Great Wall of China visible today largely dates from the Ming dynasty, as they rebuilt much of the wall in stone and brick, often extending its line through challenging terrain. Some sections remain in relatively good condition or have been renovated, while others have been damaged or deconstructed for their building materials, or lost due to the ravages of time.

Much like the Ming era, the Knights begin construction of their new Football Stadium Fall of 2017. History will not be lost, but rather relocated to meet the needs of fortifying themselves in the ‘New Era’ against 6A competition. Besides hard work and team allegiance, their fan base fortifies the Knights greatly. As many players and coaches have stated in press releases, ‘our fans are what keep us centered and focused. Without our fans, we are just another team on the field’.

Consider attending the Knights football games of 2017 and help STMA build that wall to 6A. http://www.mnfootballhub.com/schedule/day/league_instance/56157/2017/9/29?subseason=395994&referrer=3329319&tags%5B%5D=Class+6A&tag_match=all

Today is the final day to Vote Yes for STMA. 7am-8pm Middle School West Door A

Timeline photos 06/02/2017

As you know, tomorrow (Tuesday, February 7) is Election Day for the STMA bond referendum. We strongly urge your “Yes” vote at STMA Middle School West, Door A, between 7 AM and 8 PM.

This capital bond referendum is a long-overdue solution to the growing needs of our community and school district – with added classrooms, enhanced safety and security measures, updated classroom technology, as well as additional facilities. Ignoring our needs by voting “no” or not showing up to vote will only grow the costs to local taxpayers down the road. The longer we wait, the more expensive addressing our needs become.

We understand as an association and as parents that extra-curricular programs add tremendously to our children’s overall education and physical well-being. So many life lessons are learned through participation in these activities including teamwork, being part of something bigger than yourself, accountability, sacrifice, discipline, overall health, commitment, and the list goes on and on. The opportunity to participate in activities needs to be embraced by our community, not only for OUR kids, but for future generations to come. Lessons learned outside the classroom are critical for a student’s success in life!

This is OUR TIME to take action and ensure passage of this IMPORTANT vote! We won’t have another opportunity to add necessary sports facilities in our children’s school careers! If this fails, it would be a shame!

This election will be won or lost by our willingness to vote and help drive other YES votes to turnout. By voting “yes” on this referendum, our community will benefit for decades to come!

Please do not forget to vote!

You can vote early today until 4PM at STMA Middle School West (Door A).

Election Day is tomorrow – Tuesday, February 7. Voting is open at STMA Middle School West (Door A) from 7 AM until 8 PM.

Go vote! Bring your neighbors with you! Encourage your family and friends to do the same!

Let’s do this for STMA!

I have posted once before and am going to post one more time due to some of the things I have read online.
Full disclosure: I am a math teacher at STMA High School, a coach for STMA Football, and am a resident of St. Michael along with my wife and 3 kids who all attend STMA.
My statements below are my own as a community member and parent and I am NOT speaking on behalf of my employer ISD 885.
Recently, I have read that people would vote for the upcoming bond at STMA if it was all for education. The question has also been asked what is wrong with wanting to split the vote into education items and athletics. I don't believe there is anything wrong with wanting it as 2 questions or not believing it is all for education, I just disagree with you.
I believe the bond IS all for education. In fact, the Minnesota State High School League refers to high school sports and activities as Education-Based Activities. As stated earlier, I am a high school football coach, formerly a JV tennis coach, and have coached my own children (and many other kids) in a variety of youth sports while at STMA. I do not view my job as an educator as something I do from 7:30-3:30 inside the four walls of a classroom. In fact, I hope it is something much bigger than that. Most of our coaches still view themselves as educators when they take to the field, courts, diamond, etc.
I hope that the young people I have had the privilege to coach over the years (regardless of the level) have learned more than sport specific skills. I hope they have learned perseverance, how to handle adversity, accountability, how to be a part of something bigger than yourself, how to be a good teammate, how to communicate, and I could go on and on. I am not claiming these things cannot be learned somewhere else including the classroom, but I also know they are reinforced in athletics. I struggle to only discuss athletics but it seems to be a sticking point for some in the bond.
Adding facilities in the STMA Communities allows for more kids to experience the above opportunities within our own communities. I write many letters of recommendations for high school students each year. In talking with college admissions reps, most are looking for students who are involved in something outside of the classroom. While GPA and class rank are important, they only paint a portion of the overall student.
STMA is unique. I don't believe it is a place that views education as something that just occurs during the school day inside the walls of a classroom. Arts, athletics, and academics all play a roll in developing our students as does work and whatever else is a passion for our students. The district does what it can to support all students.
I realize "Wants" vs "Needs" is an opinion. My opinion when we built the high school was that a 1400 seat PAC was a "want". Little did I realize over 10 years later that it would regularly be full for concerts and performances. To me, something that is being used and filled for events demonstrates a need in the community.
If the bond passes, I believe we will see these new facilities being used all the time by students, community members, and others. Our current school buildings (hockey arena included) are used about as often as they can be. It is often challenging to find space when needed and I believe adding space in the communities will help.
I know this does not answer the concerns everyone has about the proposed bond. I just felt compelled to explain that I see education painted with a larger brush than just what occurs in the classroom which is a vision I believe is shared by the STMA district as a whole.

Vote Yes for STMA

16/12/2016

(Thank You Coach Cornell)

Full disclosure: I am a math teacher at STMA High School, a coach for STMA Football, and am a resident of St. Michael along with my wife and 3 kids who all attend STMA.

My statements below are my own as a community member and parent and I am NOT speaking on behalf of my employer ISD 885.

I have taught at STMA since 2000 and have been a resident since 2004. I have been involved in a number of committees during my time here including when the new high school was being planned after being approved in 2005.

At that time, many people thought the Fieldhouse and Performing Arts Center(PAC) were extravagant "wants" and not "needed". After 7 years in use, I would say they have both proven to be needed. The Fieldhouse is full throughout the day with Phy Ed classes and practices and then busy with community members at night and on the weekend. The PAC is used on a regular basis and will be packed this coming Monday for another great choir concert. I would encourage you to check it out for yourself if you have time and can find room. These "wants" at the time have proved to be "needs" and are both a huge asset for our community.

Now we are having the same debate on "wants" vs "needs" with the upcoming bond. Regardless of your stance on some items on the bond, I believe what STMA does incredibly well is teach to the WHOLE child. For some students, this involves only the academic classroom. For others, this involves being involved in activities outside the classroom. All activities are beneficial in some way to the students. I would say most who lead these activities don't care whether they fall under the umbrella of "Arts" or "Athletics". The coaches and directors work together to support each other and encourage the students to do the same. Everyone works together to establish a culture of support and success in all aspects of student life.

Yes, open enrollment is increasing the last few years. The reason would seem to be STMA offers so many opportunities for the students to succeed. Academics, Activities, Facilities, Staff, Parents, Families, and the Students themselves all provide for this Excellent experience.

The district's motto of "Excellence is Our Tradition" is modeled in everything the schools and communities do. I am often asked, "What makes STMA so great?" My only answer is "Everything." It is a culture that has been established over years through the work of many people and supportive communities. It is not just 1-2 things. It's EVERYTHING.

I will be voting YES and encourage you to do the same.

Thanks!
Keith Cornell
