The thing is, words like:
- heavy
- hard
- enough
- try
- effort

Are so subjective and up for interpretation that even trying to explain something like progressive overload to neurodivergent audience requires finesse.

I could see on our community call today that as I was explaining the concept, faces were contorting with confusion because to an audience that is so intently focused on the minutia, so caught up in specificity and wanting to follow the rules and do things correctly - they need to not only hear these words but understand what I mean by them.

And being able to then flip the script, and instead of talking about things being heavy or heavy enough, I explained it in the concept of “reps in reserve.”

Boom - it clicked.

This is what I mean when I talk about coaching through an ND lens or using neuro affirming language and approaches.

It’s not enough to just understand how ND women process information or the fact that they experienced things like burnout cognitive overload.

It’s not enough to just know that ADHD mums will be sensory seeking or go through peaks and troughs in their effort.

It’s not enough to understand that women with a trauma background or complex PTSD need time to integrate information or process things differently.

A coach that supports neuro divergent or neuro complex women, needs to be able to do this on the fly, flip and change their approach, and manipulate their language to meet the woman in front of them. And no woman is the same.

CoachingThe Long Game over the past 18 months alongside my own journey as a late diagnosed AuDHD woman/ mum/ business owner has demonstrated to me how different the approach needs to be for women who identify as near a complex (this can also include women with trauma, depression, anxiety, bipolar, OCD etc).

I’m teaching a workshop next week called “Easy On Purpose: teaching Neurodivergent mums habit show up for their health without white knuckling it”

It’s on Thursday, 7PM (Melbourne time) and the best thing about it is it’s free

Comment “EASY” and I’ll send you the registration link.

Society tells you to push.
Society tells you to go hard.
That your productivity is your worth.
That your body should be a certain way.
Society tells you that if you are just “okay”, you should be operating at maximum efficiency.

But social rules, expectations and other neurotypical manifestations are not how neurocomplex women can operate – at least not for ever.

It might’ve worked for awhile.
It might’ve worked in your 20s

However, the cognitive load will eventually overtake your capacity & this is why we end up in burnout over & over again.

When coaching neurocomplex women, mothers, and business owners, I feel like a big part of my role is slowing them down.

Reminding them that they are not their productivity.
Reminding them that speed is not the goal.

Reminding them that being “okay enough” is not a reason to move onto the next step.

I want you to move on when you feel OVER your capacity
I want you to attempt more when you feel more than able.

I want you to slow down in a way that allows you to integrate each step & minimise the difficulty, the mental fatigue, & take your neurodiversity into consideration.

is a few weeks out of an eight month long burnout experience & asked my thoughts on her attempting a deficit (aka intermittently dropping calories to drop body fat)

She’s done 5 sessions in the gym & has her head above water.

My advice was to slow down.

My advice was to get another 20 sessions under her belt.
My advice was to attempt this in six weeks time from a place of overflow having managed the new habit of training in the gym & all of the complications that come with that change in her lifestyle.

For Neurodivergent women feeling “ok enough” shouldn’t be the trigger for more & anyone who tries to coach you that way is going to lead you into burnout.

This is the long game method.

If you want to learn more about the methods I use- I have a workshop coming up called “Easy On Purpose: Teaching ND mums how to show up for their health without white knuckling it.

Comment EASY for deets.
