Anxiety is not always a sign that something is wrong.

Sometimes excitement is rising in your body, and an old habit is flattening it before you can feel it.

Notice what happens when you let the feeling move instead of immediately managing it.

Speaking your truth in a relationship may feel inconvenient. But saying where you are with an open heart is compassion. Consistent honesty gives both people something real to work with.

Jealousy can point toward a desire you are afraid to own.

Listening does not mean obeying the feeling or taking it literally. It means getting curious: What quality, experience, or possibility does this jealousy say matters to me?

The emotion is not a verdict. It is information.

7 things I notice about self-reliant people (often mistaken for high-agency), especially as an executive coach:

1. You find it hard to feel the gift of everything you've been given.
2. And, all the gifts that are always provided to you.
3. You think about what you need to manage rather than what to be grateful for.
4. Being self-reliant can be both a blessing and a curse.
5. It is a blessing in that you are typically very resourceful, determined, and capable.
6. The curse is that you often feel incredibly alone and unmet - like you have to do everything themselves.
7. The good news is: If you are self-reliant and learn how to receive and be grateful, you can have both.

Three patterns can keep a relationship fight alive:

1. I don't feel seen.
2. I'm trying to change you.
3. I need to defend myself.

Under the first is pain that wants to be received. Under the second is the message that who you are right now is not acceptable. Under the third is the fear that another person's view will define you.

The next time conflict heats up, ask which pattern is driving it. Shift any one of the three, and the fight can shift.

A habit is often not just the behavior. It can be a strategy for escaping a feeling.

Someone who fills every hour with work may look driven, while stillness feels dangerous. The question is not only, "How do I stop?" It is, "What do I feel right before I reach for it?"

When you meet the emotion underneath, the habit no longer has to do all the protecting.

One of the greatest lessons my marriage taught me: A relationship thrives when you are in awe of the other person.

If being hard on yourself worked, it would have worked by now.

"Should" is a poor inner management technique. It often evokes rebellion or passive aggression. Wonder gives you another way to meet the goal without turning yourself into the enemy.

Every emotion is like a young child.

Ignore it and it will find a louder way to be known. Treat it as bad and it grows defiant. Shun its nature and it can turn stagnant. Let it go unchecked and it can run the home.

Give it attention and connection, and it can turn back toward you in love.

The work is not to silence emotion or let it make every decision. It is to listen closely enough that it no longer has to shout.
