One of my favorite clinicians is coming to Portland (and Washington) in just a few weeks.
If you don't swim like you want to, PLEASE take her clinic! !

So you have a setback...What do YOU do?
1. Get upset
2. Count out how many days and workouts you are going to miss out on. How many rides, races, etc. are lost.
3. Get depressed
4. Swear, pray and try to figure out how you aren't going to gain weight and go nuts from being a couch sitter.
5. Remain grumpy
6. Isolate. Research injuries, and modified workouts, and see what you can do when you can't do what you want to do.
7. Ruminate, feel like life is over.
and then....
3 weeks pass.
1. You've calmed down. You realize the slower pace is actually a nice change.
2. You've found out more ways to "modify" workouts than you ever thought possible! You haven't gained weight.
3. You've realized that the number of workouts missed spread out in one year is a small fraction. (You have used the calculator.)
4. You wonder how in the world you're going to get back into being so much more busy.
5. You reconnect with some people you hadn't seen in awhile.
6. You clean up some things that had been untouched.
7. You see the light.
and there are suddenly only 2.5 weeks left in the initial recovery period. And you start to want to savor each day and bask in the sun, slowly play with the garden, etc!
For any training athlete, or active adult, how you deal with setbacks is an interesting topic that is worth a ponder.
Resting is a crucial cycle to healing the body. It was one thing I was adamant about after my own Ironman races. Maybe not even adamant enough. But like this time, it was finally at 3 weeks where I settled, and then after week 4 I was back in the saddle, always.
I hope the racers out there who might still follow this page are planning an off season and a change of pace. It's starting to be that time. Off-season is a great choice to make versus moving straight into a single-sport focus.
This setback has become...my off-season. :-)

This is a great race to volunteer at! I worked the finish line last year and received a nice well-fitting shirt, wineglass and canteen, as well as entry to an amazing intimate wine tasting (25 wineries casual feel), and a discount to the next year's event. Each year location alternates - this year at Stoller Vineyards.

I love this company that hell of a lot of ppl that ordinarily would not “adventure” to do just that! Sure it’s a premium priced service but it’s better to spend some coin on healthy adventures than sitting on the couch and watching movies about foreign lands..
Glad to see they’ve added this “extra feature” to some trips, and hopefully more non-practitioners will find the art and science in the practice of Yoga.
Over the last 9 weeks I’ve been attending 2x/week 75min classes and said “Wow!” Nearly every class. If it’s not a part of your weekly training regime, please give it a try!
PM me if you need a recommendation on where to go!

I love this post! I never knew the famous saying “health is your only true wealth” is stolen from Ghandi.

Health is Wealth - Fitness Gym and Classes in Beaverton, OR - FIT Academy
If health is wealth, why is it that we often take better care of our pets than of ourselves? Let's consider the real value of going to the gym and getting back in shape.

Good article on fueling for triathletes. Been working on logging all my nutrition and hydration now for 8 weeks and the data here is good support for my more balanced protein/carb/fat intake across my meals instead of stacking at dinner. Makes a difference and an enjoyable energy during the whole day and not worrying about "cramming recovery" as he references. Follow Alex if you're an Outside Magazine fan, too.
The Scientific Case for a Big Breakfast
For long-term health in endurance athletes, when you eat is nearly as important as how much you eat

Isn't this the truth for most people you know who are unhealthy and/or overweight? Always talking about what they're taking or trying? "We spend about 80% of our time worrying about details such as the proportion of protein to carbs to fat, whether to ban gluten, which form of coenzyme Q10 to take and whether saturated fat is good or bad, and we pay far less attention to the things that statistically have the greatest impact on our lives."
Exercise daily with a HR monitor if you don't know what exercise effort is, get your body fat tested so you have a baseline from which to work, stop eating stuff from the middle of the store and drinking so much.

The ITU has decided the World Championships ought to have an “Open Race”. In an effort to get people to Denmark, or forever?
If you have some frequent flier miles, this would sure be the most idyllic setting for a world championship event!

Monday Motivation (it has been a long day!).
Are you able to stand on one leg for 60 seconds, not wobbling? Great !
Now, stand on the one leg and use the other in front of you to draw out all the letters in the alphabet. Find that tricky? keep at it!
Remember that running is the MAIN EVENT of the triathlon (sorry you swimming fiends). The RUN Is where the race begins. What is running but a series of single leg efforts? If your stability from the foot, ankle, knee and hip isn't present, what's your run doing to your body and how long will you last?
Single leg standing is but the most basic of the thoughts behind running, but gotta start somewhere!
An article you will love for the insightful diagrams !
Developing Strength & Stability in the Foot, Ankle, and Lower Leg
In Silas's previous article he discussed some common running-related injuries of the foot, ankle, and lower leg. Keeping the mechanisms and dysfunctional movement patterns that cause injury to these areas in mind, he now shares ways to effectively strengthening the foot, ankle, and lower leg muscles
