THROWBACK THURSDAY TO FEBRUARY 16, 2017:

A historic evening for Wake Forest Charter Academy's athletic program which was overseen, managed, staffed and developed by Panther Sports Academy, as the Boys Middle school Varsity basketball team won the "Triangle Area Athletic Conference" championship game (in the Raleigh, NC metro area) with a 40-37 win on Thursday, February 16, 2017.

This was the 1st Conference Championship in any sport in the history of the school, and it was the first school year that WFCA had competitive Middle School teams after Panther Sports Academy spent the entire 2015-2016 school year focusing on developing the fundamentals, basic skills, developing a solid foundation and competing only in house in three (3) sports, Volleyball, Basketball and soccer.

*NOTE: During the 2016-2017 school year, the Middle School Girls Volleyball team finished in 2nd place losing in the Conference Championship game, and the Boys soccer team qualified for the playoffs where they lost in the Conference semifinals game.

Message from David Cuervo:
Topic: Is your child interested or committed?

There's a significant difference between a child having a casual interest in a sport, as opposed to being committed. When a child is committed to a sport, that child will make attending practices and games a responsibility, a necessity, even a passion to continue to improve. When a child is just casually interested, he or she just has a casual interest in participating, and is willing to participate in that sport up to a certain limit, with limited commitment.

A problem that we often see with some parents and children, is that they expect casual, unfocused and leisurely participation in a sport to have the same results as someone who is truly committed.

To truly develop, improve and succeed at a higher level in any sport, it requires more planning, commitment, and focused effort than just "casual participation".

Based on this brief information, is your child in a program that best meets his or her needs?

Definitely a question to ask yourself as a parent.

Panther Sports Academy offers group programs at schools and in different communities, including the homeschool community. Participants in our group programs ranges from children with limited experience who are looking to learn and/or participate in a sport or different sports programs, to children with experience who are committed to a sport or a few sports, with the interest of improving and playing at a higher level.

Please see in comment section below for information about Panther Sports Academy “Premier Programs.”

Topic: Self care and leadership:

This is me (David Cuervo) in the early morning of a new month on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 in Raleigh, NC at the gym for a morning workout before beginning to attend to the different programs and services in Raleigh, NC, as well as attending to ongoing programs and services in Florida. Being that it was below 40 degrees this morning, do you think I wanted to leave the house and go to the gym?
A big part of me would have rather stayed home and ignore what I planned to do this morning and come up with many reasons and excuses why I could skip my morning workout today. I’m too cold 🥶, or I’m too old (I’m 54 years old)could have been used as excuses. However, I set a certain level of standards and expectations for myself, and following through on what I intend to do have been contributing factors to the overall success and wellbeing in my life. I believe in the holistic approach to success (physical, mental and spiritual). By prioritizing self care, I’m better able to better serve the children, schools, organizations and families that Panther Sports Academy serves.

One of the most important principles in leadership is that before one can expect to lead others, one has to lead themselves first. If one is not capable or willing to lead themselves, then it is highly unlikely that one will successfully lead others. Providing children, and even adults and parents the necessary tools and strategies to develop the necessary habits based on their goals to maximize their abilities and potential is essential. This includes the important principles in leadership, which includes good habits and self discipline.

If one expects others to show up for them, one can start by expecting to show up for themselves first, and then for others. Also, if one strives to achieve certain goals, I expect their efforts, actions and habits to match those goals.

There are two (2) months left in the 2023 calendar year. Are your habits and/or your child’s or athletes habits in alignment with yours or their goals for 2024?

Message from David Cuervo:

There is a misconception that “hard work” alone will lead to success. However, what is oftentimes overlooked is that a well designed game plan, efficient practice sessions and working within a system that is able to make the necessary adjustments depending on various factors can lead one closer to success, and increase an athlete’s or a team’s chances of success, and/or maximizing their potential.
Hard work with no direction, and no purpose, and just working hard for the sake of working hard has its limits. Yes, having a good work ethic and working hard has its merits, but knowing when to work “smarter” and not just “harder” during certain times of the season or year can make the difference in maximizing an athlete’s or team’s performance and/or success, and peaking at the right time of the season.

Long term success begins in the planning process. Don’t overlook a sound strategy and an efficient system.

Be mindful of your environment. Be mindful of your child’s environment. Do not overlook the “Power of Association.”

Message from David Cuervo:

During the month of August we will begin contacting parents that are interested in having their child/children be part of our Panther Sports Academy “Premier Program.” Panther Sports Academy “Premier Programs” consists of Private and Semi-Private sessions where personal development will be incorporated with sports skill sessions. This program will only be offered to a limited number of committed children and families that are willing to make a minimum of a three (3) month commitment to this program.

This program is not for everyone. This program is only for committed children and families that are interested in having their child/children not only improve in their primary sport, or even in multiple sports, but also interested in developing personally and eventually becoming leaders in their team or sports programs, and in life. For those parents that are interested in ONLY having their child develop in athletics, and becoming a better student, good teammate and striving to be a leader is irrelevant, then this program is NOT for you.

This program is currently being offered in FL in Miami-Dade County, Broward County and Palm Beach County. We also offer our “Premier Programs” in Raleigh, NC.

Sports offerings includes:
*Soccer
*Basketball
*Volleyball and wrestling for ages 8 and up.

Anyone interested in our upcoming openings beginning in January 2024, can email us at
[email protected], and we can schedule a phone call during the month of August to see if your child is a good fit for this program, and if this program can meet your child’s needs and interests.
