Pakistani cricket team set to leave for WI


LAHORE: Pakistan cricket team will depart for West Indies on Tuesday for a lengthy series, in which the teams compete in four Twenty20, three ODI and three tests.

To qualify directly for the upcoming ODI World Cup, Pakistan will have to defeat the Caribbean side in one day internationals, being played at West Indies.

Sarfraz Ahmed will captain the ODI and Twenty20 teams while Misbahul Haq will be leading the test side during the series. The visitors will start the series with Twenty20 match at Bridgetown, Barbados on March 26.

Meanwhile, six players and ten officials have reached Karachi from Lahore where from the team will leave for West Indies.

DUBAI (Spórts Nèws) – The third phase of Pakistan Super League (PSL) is all set to start from today (Thursday) at Dubai International Cricket Stadium after rest of two days.

Only one match is scheduled for the day between Karachi Kings and Quetta Gladiators. Kings will fight to stay alive in the tournament as they have to win every game to qualify for the playoffs. Sangakara XI have played five matches so far and won only two of them having scored four points. They are at the bottom of the table.

On the other hand, Gladiators are sitting at the top of the table and require only one win to qualify for the playoffs. Sarfraz XI have played five matches, won three and lost only one game. Their match against Peshawar Zalmi was abandoned due to rain and both teams were awarded a point each.

Lahore Qalandars, Islamabad United and Peshawar Zalmi are at second, third and fourth places respectively.

The match will start at 09:00 PM (PST).

County players seek security assurances ahead of PSL final

A number of county cricketers named in a list of players who could be called upon to travel to Pakistan for the final of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) remain unsure about whether they will go. Earlier this week, the PSL decided to go ahead with staging its final in Lahore, despite a recent series of attacks across Pakistan that have claimed over 100 lives.

The five franchises were presented with a list of 54 foreign players whom the PCB claim are willing to travel to Lahore for the final.

Kieran Powell has been recalled and was named in the 15-man West Indies squad on Tuesday (February 21) for the three-match One-Day International series against England. The 26-year-old last played for West Indies in 2014 before he took a break from the game and tried his hand at baseball.
The opener has been in prolific form with 513 runs, including three centuries, from nine games in the Regional Super50 tournament. Powell returned to first-class cricket in March last year. He also played first-class cricket in Sri Lanka in 2015 for for Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club.
There was no place for Sulieman Benn, Johnson Charles and Sunil Narine, while Alzarri Joseph, who was first included and then withdrawn from the tri-series squad that involved Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka, makes a return.
Marlon Samuels, who has now been cleared to bowl by the International Cricket Council, continues to be left out of the side. He last played an ODI in October last year but was subsequently left out of the tri-series in Zimbabwe.
The team will assemble in Antigua for a training camp before taking on England on March 3 and 5 in the first two one-dayers and will then travel to Barbados for the final game on March 9.
