Some people say this exercise is useless.

“How could you possibly carry such a large weapon around for self-defense? Even if you could bring it with you, wouldn't it be ineffective in confined spaces against shorter weapons?”

The same question can be asked about people who practice swords, sabers, and other traditional weapons. Can you really carry a sword with you everywhere?
During one of my evening walks in Qinhuangdao, China, I was carrying my son's toy crossbow. A local citizen warned me that the police might stop me if I continued carrying it in public. Later, I even discovered that I could not bring it through the train station security checkpoint. Although everyone knew it was just a toy, it was still classified as a potentially dangerous weapon.
So let's return to the topic of the big pole.
If it is not practical for modern self-defense, why do we still practice it?

In many Internal Chinese Martial Arts systems, "big pole shaking" is a common training method. Its primary purpose is to develop whole-body power and explosive force. While many people today use the term fajin (發勁), most masters I met in China simply called it fali (發力), meaning "issuing power."

Many martial arts that originated during wartime periods—such as Xingyiquan and Bajiquan—incorporated principles from spear training into their empty-hand combat systems. The spear was often considered the "king of weapons," and its mechanics greatly influenced the way practitioners generate power, coordinate the body, and apply force.
Big pole training helps practitioners understand these principles more clearly. Many students gain a deeper understanding of their art once they begin weapon training. When you can feel the weight, control the movement, and generate power through the actual weapon from which the system's principles were derived, many things suddenly make sense.

You begin to understand why certain postures are performed in a particular way, why the body aligns as it does, and how power is transmitted through the entire structure.

Lan Zha yi

This move called Lan Zha Yi, translated as "Lazy tying coat". I never saw this move's application like this before. But IMHO, TCMA's applications are not fixed. They changed based on situations

While in China a few years ago. During practice Baji, my Shifu taught me a movement and then its application. We do drills with application. Usually he goes home earlier but we disciple keep practice till afternoon

He handed over me to my senior. My Senior continues the mentoring. He showed me the movement and its application. I had a bit of confusion. I told him,"Shifu taught me a different way. Is this your creation bro?". He replied "I didn't, Shifu taught me this way"

The day after, we asked Shifu about the different applications. He replied, "Chinese Martial Arts application isn't fixed. It depends on the situation. So the application could be different in different situations. That's why we focused on principles and forms, not the applications". This happened too to my silat lessons. I asked another Shifu and got the same answers

The idea is to make it natural and our body will adapt according to the feed from our opponents

This reminds me of the application Baji Ji Ben Gong called Kua Ma / Tong Bei Gong. The initial version of our Baji came from my Shifu, Yu Kai. The system downhanded from his Shifu Wang Xide and his Grand teacher Zhu Qingkun who is disciple of Grandmaster Wei Hong Bin and Wei Hong En

We focused on this single technique but used it for many cases and applications guided by Shifu. At that time we had many gold medalists on our National Push Hands competition

2016 in Tianjin,China. During the practice session he said....
"the achievement in Kung Fu is on the fundamental side, not how many moves, techniques, or applications we learn"

2012 in Jakarta, I practice under Master Chen Zhonghua. He said the same thing as my Shifu said a few years later.
"The fundamentals are the most important thing in Taichi. If you do fundamentals well then all your moves are Taichi. No matter if you remember all moves, right or wrong your forms. All your moves are already Taichi. But if your fundamentals are crap! Although you remember all moves very well then your forms aren't Taichi!"

As Tong Bei Gong principles he described as 中正平和 no ego, not eager to do things, being relax and calm and neutral. This became our group principle, applied into our push hands principle

Peng Jing

"Not a friendly one and arrogant" saat itu dia mau menyapu kaki saya dari belakang niatnya udah kebaca mau bikin saya terlentang.

Sebut saja beliau “Ai L”.
Usia 90 tahun. Pasca operasi lutut.

Saat pertama datang latihan Taichi, beliau hanya mampu mengikuti sekitar 30 menit. Itu pun sebagian besar sambil duduk.

Sesi demi sesi berjalan…

• Sesi ke-2: mulai kuat hampir 1 jam, sekitar 75% masih duduk
• Sesi ke-3: sudah lebih banyak berdiri
• Sesi ke-4: 80% latihan dilakukan sambil berdiri
• Dan di sesi ke-5…

Beliau berhasil latihan Taichi 1 jam penuh tanpa duduk sama sekali.

Bukan tentang jurus hebat.
Bukan tentang gerakan sempurna.

Lalu ada lagi murid lain, sebut saja “Suk A”.

Beliau berhasil mengikuti latihan penuh 2 jam sambil berdiri.

Taichi bukan soal usia.
