JUNE 2026
The NCAA has recently approved a major overhaul of Division I eligibility known as the "5-for-5" (or "5-in-5") age-based eligibility model. It replaces the long-standing rule that allowed athletes four seasons of competition within five calendar years with a new system that generally allows five seasons of competition within five years.
Under the new model:
• Student-athletes may compete in up to five seasons during a five-year eligibility window.
• The five-year clock begins on the earlier of:
•• the athlete's first full-time college enrollment, or
•• the academic year following their 19th birthday.
• Redshirts are essentially eliminated. The traditional strategy of sitting out a season to preserve eligibility is no longer part of the standard model.
Potential impact on college softball
For Division I softball, the change could be significant:
Programs may retain star players for a true fifth competitive season rather than using a traditional redshirt. Coaches will need to rethink scholarship planning and roster management because every athlete potentially has five full playing seasons. Recruiting strategies may shift, as older, experienced players could occupy roster spots longer. Athletes who previously would have used a redshirt for development or injury rehabilitation will instead use one of their five competition seasons unless they qualify for one of the limited exceptions.
For softball fans, this is one of the biggest eligibility changes in decades and will likely reshape roster construction, recruiting, and player development across Division I over the next several years.
