Today we stand at attention for a moment in our nation’s history that changed everything. 84 years ago on December 7th 1941 the Day That Lives in Infamy the Imperial Japanese Navy launched a surprise attack on Naval Base Pearl Harbor. In under ninety minutes 2,403 American service members were killed 1,178 were wounded and 8 battleships 3 cruisers and more than 180 aircraft were destroyed or damaged.

Even in complete chaos Marines and United States Navy Sailors fought back with every ounce of grit firing anti aircraft guns rescuing the wounded and refusing to quit. One factor that helped turn the tide later was the absence of all United States aircraft carriers from Pearl Harbor during the attack which allowed America to recover regroup and push forward.

This moment forced the United States into World War II and only six months later victory at the Battle of Midway changed the momentum of the entire Pacific theater. The 3rd and 6th Marine Defense Battalions stood their ground on Midway proving again what American resolve looks like when tested.
