HS sprint protege (11.64w/11.70; c/o 2025) struggled with a technical error (1st photo)
*
This week she had a breakthrough… Can you spot the difference (subsequent photos) 🧐?
*
Problem is not “solved” yet. The difference is subtle… But potentially will improve her performance dramatically. All sports revolve around problem solving. But… It is an ongoing process.
*
However, it is great when things click.
*
She got better this week. 💪🏾

Wide receiver Bo Roberson was one of several African American players on the first Miami Dolphins team in 1966. But did you know he's the only person to have an Ivy League degree, a Ph.D, an Olympic medal and a major professional football career? A native of Philadelphia, Roberson was a scholar athlete at Cornell University in football, basketball and track. He qualified for the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome in the long jump and won the silver medal. Roberson finished second by one centimeter to American teammate Ralph Boston who set a then Olympic record. Roberson went on to play 6 seasons in the AFL with the San Diego Chargers (1961), Oakland Raiders (1962-1964), Buffalo Bills (1965) and the Miami Dolphins (1966). In his one and only season with the Dolphins, he caught 26 passes for 519 yards and 2 touchdowns. He was also a member of the 1965 Bills AFL Championship team.

After his football career, Roberson became the first track and field coach at the University of California Irvine and later coached Rolling Hills High School. He passed away on April 15, 2001 at the age of 65. At the time of his death, he was working as a psychologist with the Los Angeles Unified School District.

I’ve been having this discussion with Track & Field people recently…
*
And I have been preaching this for years…
*
STOP thinking that 11.00 (boy) and 12.00 (girl) 100m performers are commonplace… They simply are NOT!
*
Statistically, that is the pattern here in San Diego County (3+ million residents), California (40 million) and the United States as a whole.
*
Historically, boys that fast comprise less than 2% of legitimate sprint performances. Girls that fast are even more rare… Like less than 1%.
*
I know some will say, “We have FIVE guys on our team who run that fast.” Perhaps that is the case. But for that team with lots of fast people… There are likely 100+ teams with NO ONE that fast.
*
So, if a kid can break those times and have good grades… That doesn’t mean they will be recruited by LSU… But, they WILL get an opportunity somewhere. Kids that fast… With good grades… Are not as commonplace as many think.
*
If you still don’t believe me, look at the photos. This is from 2023 Athletic NET data. Is this EVERY kid in EVERY race? Of course not. But it is a VERY representative sample. Far bigger than what one would get in any political or scientific study.
*
And this pattern holds true if you check back in every (non-Covid) season.
*
Maybe next I’ll share numbers for HS boy 23 and 24-foot long jumpers. It’ll blow your mind!
*
I hope this helps someone.
