Hand bell ringing with Mere Melodies

Mere Melodies is a local Handbell team open to anyone interested in making music. Age no barrier. It is very good for hand and eye co-ordination and mental stimulation. Ability to read music is not necessary but a sense of rhythm helps. These introductory sessions are gentle and inclusive and for all regardless of ability, it’s a year round activity not just for Christmas!

Hand bell ringing will take place in St Michael’s church on Friday 9th August from 2.30-4.00 and again on Sunday 11 August between 2.00-4.00.

Archery

The use of bows and arrows was probably developed in Africa in the later Middle Stone Age (approx 70,000 years ago) and they continued to be used for hunting and warfare until the 19th century when archery was made obsolete by the invention of fi****ms. Archery is still practised for hunting and as a competitive sport.

Modern precision archery equipment, such as that seen in Olympic competition, is highly technical and uses CNC-machined bows, with limbs and arrows made from carbon fibre. However, many archers still favour the traditional longbow which was typically made of yew. As yew has become more scarce and expensive many longbows crafted today are made of a combination of woods such as hickory, bamboo and lemonwood.

At Ballands Bowmen we train archers in the basic techniques of archery using a wooden ‘recurve’ bow and aluminium arrows. Once they are proficient they are free to try other styles of bow. As well as ‘target archery’ (roundel targets on a sports ground) many people enjoy the challenge of ‘field archery’ where targets are set out on natural terrain, through woodland, over water and up and downhill.

Archery will take place on Duchy Manor Playing field ( next to the Andy Young Pavilion) on Friday 9th August between 5.30-7.00 PM. Come along and have a go.

Welcome to Ballands Bowmen The Club Formed in 1970, the club takes its name from Ballands House, Penselwood, Somerset, where it was founded by the late Major Robin Archer. Field archery is the focus of this top UK archery club whose members have a history of achievements at National, European and Wo...

In years gone by, a sword was a necessity in everyday life. Fencing did not become a sport until the late 19th century.
