🗣️ Messi: “My ‘gift’? I was 4 or 5 years old and I had the same style as I did when I was growing up. My gift kept growing. I always say that it came to me naturally.”

Messi: “I grew up with the ball for as long as I can remember. I always played with brothers, cousins... older people. In the neighbourhood, I loved to play.”

Messi: “I wanted to play with my brothers and they wouldn’t let me. And I used to get very angry... my fights were because of that. My childhood was spent in the street. Nowadays that’s very difficult. It was football all day long.”

What would Messi think of this “memorized cone drill” culture which coaches the natural gifts out of the better players? 🤔

We are excited to announce our new program in East Boca, "Just Play" Tuesday, which consists of multiple 3v3 mini fields. The biggest issue in US Soccer is that players don’t have the opportunity to play without a coach interrupting them. ‘Play’ is the very thing needed to develop as creative and independent-thinking players.

Learn through ‘play’ and become a ‘player’ the ‘soccer athlete’ can come later. Players are being coached out of their creative capacities. Getting players to memorize militarized drills and set functions only creates a rigid player for a game that flows. Messi did not learn to dribble by memorizing set functions on cones, he played with freedom with his friends and learnt to naturally and instinctively respond to other players body movements. Going out onto the field with set functions only puts limitations on your game. Yes it will get you so far, being technically good, but in a game that flows you need improvisation (creative problem solving at a high speed) to really be in the ‘flow state’. was once asked what he was thinking when he dribbles, he said “I’m not thinking anything, it just happens”
The information stored in the subconscious part of your brain is far far greater than the part that holds the set functions. That’s why you see a difference in flow-state when you watch Brazil to let’s say the US mens team. 75% of a young players playing time in Brazil or Europe is done without a coach even being there. Break time at school, lunch time at school, after school etc.

Even said in The Guardian it was exposure to street football in the UK when he first moved there for a year when he was 12 that changed his perception on street football culture and the benefits of it. academy do not do any training unopposed. A 1v1 is better than any cone function.
So how do we solves this problem? Tell your kids to play in the streets?
We could bring the freedom of the streets into coaching! That way we won’t be coaching creativity out of players. The divine source of every great player you have ever liked watching.

The streets will never forget this guy. Here is one man who goes out there and is his unapologetic best version of himself. People slay him but he gets up every time, even when he is rolling round the floor multiple times and the world’s media try and slaughter him, he silences his doubters every time like the true great that he is.

Hi Neymar Jr, how did street football shape the player you are today?

It definitely helped me to develop a fast game and that Brazilian smartness. I had a very happy childhood and I can still remember waking up every morning just wanting to play football – even though I knew I had to go to school. As soon as I arrived home I used to grab my football and go straight out and I’d play until late at night with my friends. Nothing else seemed to matter to me at that age.

No, it was quite the opposite actually. My coaches were always scared I’d get injured and miss training or a game but it didn’t stop me!

The good old coaches getting in the way as usual 🙄
