One of my favourite ways to process and release stress is to write.

Much of the time this writing is entirely private, free writing reflections on how I feel, and what is happening in my life.

It is through this that I am able to process my experiences and my emotions.

When we can't express who we are and how we feel, it can get stuck inside us, causing us unhappiness and stress until we find a way to release it.

What is your favourite way to express your self and your experience of life?

One of the most common challenges faced by people with ADHD is trouble regulating their emotions. Up to 70% of diagnosed ADHD people report emotional dysregulation, and women experience it far more than men.

These problematic emotions aren’t recognised in the DSM, but we know it’s there.

And problems regulating our emotions feed into everything else we do. We are all entirely emotional creatures. Even when we think we are being logical, the chances are we are using logic to justify decisions made by our emotions.

So many of the other traits of ADHD have, I think, dysregulated emotions at their core. Procrastination, for example, might be fear based, as is perfectionism. Impulsivity might be driven by excitement. And so on.

So it is really important for our success with ADHD that we are able to learn how to regulate our emotions.

Yoga offers so many wonderful tools to help with this problem. From developing awareness of the emotions and the thoughts that drive them, to practices and concepts that can help to release and transform the troublesome emotions, and guide our attention away from focusing on the negative.

You can see this for yourself… next time you feel anxious about something, take 3 deep breaths…. It’s a simple practice, and it doesn’t only belong to Yoga of course, but it is a powerful way to see the transformation that can occur.

I am teaching Yoga classes online to teach you a wide range of beautiful practices that will help you calm and soothe your emotions through Yoga

I remember the moment I realised I almost certainly have ADHD.

I'd been looking into why my son couldn't stop moving when we were sitting down to watch Doctor Who together. Why he would hide my things and then have no recollection of doing it. Why he seemed to have such a short attention span for some things, but could get totally lost in a book. Why he had so much trouble making friends, to the point that he would rather not even try.

I knew that fidgeting was a part of ADHD, so this was the first place I looked.

As I read through the list of symptoms, I saw myself, not him, clearer and clearer. It was as if someone had observed me for a week and made a list of the things I do.

I read more and more, and within a couple of weeks, I had announced to my friends and family that I could now explain everything about me that had ever frustrated or upset them, and could feel the shame of my perceived inadequacies melting away.

It's been about 2 years since then, and it's been the most fascinating, challenging, painful and liberating self discovery experience. I had official diagnosis last year, and was shocked at how much it being made official impacted me. I went through a really intense emotional journey - no doubt exacerbated by the arrival of Covid19 into our lives a few months later! An interesting time to be on a huge self discovery journey!

I thought I had learned a lot about myself on my path to sobriety, but reframing my life in the context of ADHD has been revelatory!

How did you work out that you have ADHD? How was the experience for you?

Looking back at life after the diagnosis, it seems so obvious. The signs are so clear in hindsight. All my memories from my life are basically moments that were so ADHD I marvel that I never saw it before.

But why would I? I just accepted that this was the way I was, and that it was because I was lazy, scatty, forgetful, untidy, moody, sensitive, flaky, and everything else I've ever been called, or called myself.

When those words are just a regular part of how you are described by yourself and others, you don't question it. You accept it. You might struggle under the weight of the shame of it, but you don't question it.

Getting the diagnosis can help to lift that weight, and free you from the shame of your perceived inadequacies, but it isn't the end of the road. You need to rebuild your self esteem, your sense of who you are, and to see yourself anew.

Yoga teaches you how to love and accept who you are right now. It guides you to learn from your past, not beat yourself up from it. It can help you be fully present with yourself and your emotions. It shows you how to relax your mind and body so that you can find peace, even with the constant narration of your ADHD brain.

I used to think that Yoga was just about giving me a toned and bendy body. My life was transformed when I learned that it offered me tools for a happier life!

I still struggle with life, I mean, who wouldn't find the modern world challenging, particularly this year! But Yoga gives me the tools and the strength to get through it, and to learn and grow through the challenges life sends my way.

I'd love to share some of these tools with you, to help you find peace in your ADHD brain.

Join me for a Chaos to Calm 1 to 1 session, where I will teach you some simple but effective practices that will help you to relax your mind and body, and find peace in the wilds of your ADHD emotions.
