Captains Away Weekend 2026

Lakeside Lodge Golf Club, Pidley

15 golfers descended on Lakeside Lodge Golf Club, Pidley, for the annual Captains Away Weekend and with the sun shining and the alcohol flowing, it turned out to be a fantastic weekend from start to finish!

Everyone enjoyed themselves, indulging in the excellent food on offer, witnessing some awesome golf shots and most importantly, enjoying the camaraderie that makes these weekends so special.

Of course, for some of the younger members of the group, the atmosphere proved a little too tempting. Overindulgence and fatigue began to take their toll on the golf course! Ex-Captain Ryan left plenty to be desired with his golf, but managed to display a level of class on the bowling alley to save face. Unfortunately, the same could not be said for Kane Waldron, who produced a questionable 25-34-25 Stableford haul across the three days to claim the wooden spoon!

Now, down to what really matters… the golf competition.

Three days of Stableford golf were played in near-perfect weather conditions on a course that has endured a hard summer but nonetheless, was looking in incredible condition.

🥉3rd - Adrian Hannant - 107 Points (OCB)
4th - Alex Shepherd - 107 Points
5th - Tom Hall, Dave Bates, Martin Lawes & Mason Hannant - 102 Points each

While many players performed admirably, there was one man who set the standard throughout the weekend, extending his lead with every passing day.

Keith Phillips, known affectionately over the weekend as ‘El Bandito’, produced a level of golf that was simply unmatched. Calls for a handicap cut echoed throughout the weekend, although thankfully all were made in good humour!

Keith rounded off his weekend with a fine speech on the final day, thanking everyone for making it such a fantastic weekend and generously donating money towards the Captain’s Charity.

As Ryan’s final act as Club Captain, it was a memorable send-off before he and his family welcome their second child very soon.

A huge well done to everyone who took part. The laughter was contagious, the golf was entertaining, the banter was relentless and, most importantly, the weekend was a fantastic success!

There was a brilliant turn out for The Links Ladies Queen Elizabeth Cup. It was a cup, kindly donated on the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, by Kate Attenborough, in order that we could commemorate her amazing reign each year at this time. Today 14 Ladies played the 9 hole cup as the drizzly weather blew over into lovely sunshine. The winner of the cup was Jane Davies (19 points), Sue Monteath 2nd place (18 points) and Denise Howell 3rd with 17 points. Coffees and drinks were enjoyed in the sunshine with the usual nattering and catching up on our weekend jaunts and social events.

Thursday Night Swindle 2026

The Thursday Night 9 hole Swindle has been taking place since April and finished last night. We've been extremely lucky with the weather this year with not one evening cancelled.
Mark Nelson-Griffiths was the runaway leader this year with an emphatic 9 wins beating Thomas Hall into 2nd place. As with every year the final Thursday ended with delicious Pizza expertly supplied by The Hole in One.

The Links Ladies had the absolute pleasure of hosting Bawburgh's Ladies for a friendly today. Whilst the result was a draw, much of the conversation was about how our friendlies were just that, it didn't matter who had won, we thoroughly enjoyed showing them around our course and all it's "quirks"(including the gusty wind!), having fun and making new golf friends. The Links Hotel laid on a lovely spread of sandwiches and cakes which was enjoyed by all. We have already set the date for our return match and will very much look forward to it. Our thanks to a lovely group of ladies that made our day at The Links.

Tim Cunningham finally achieved his first Seniors’ victory in the September
Medal after several near misses. Buoyed by a fine round at Barnham Broom a few days earlier Tim scored a nett 66 in tricky fast running conditions.
He won by two strokes from Dave Walmsley and Mike Jones.
Next up for the Seniors is a Texas Scramble.

Four of our Links Ladies (Captain Cath O'Keefe, Dawn Smith, Jane Davies & Emma Richardaon) won the Norfolk County Waltz today with 89 points narrowly beating Mundesley on countback. ...... and the good news keeps coming from The Links Golf Club.

The Link’s Seniors rich vein of form has continued in their latest two friendlies. First they avenged their only defeat when comprehensively outplaying Caldecott Hall at home under Vice Captain, Mike Spicer.
Then an even more impressive display saw the team beat Fakenham at Fakenham by 4.5 points to half a point.
Captain Irving Newton,explained “To win an away game is never easy but we seem quick to adapt to new challenges.”

Good News from The Links again!
Keith Phillips, a returning member, has quickly adapted to the demands of the Links and proved a great addition to our section.
His recent consistent form was rewarded when he captured the Bill Prince Trophy with a nett 66 in challenging conditions.
Second was the ever consistent David Bayle with a 68, one clear of another returning member, John Seaward.

The Links represented in The Race to Woodhall Spa finals for the fourth year running.

Once again The Links Country Park Hotel and Golf Club were represented in the annual Race to Woodhall Spa finals.

Earlier in the year Emma Richardson represented our ladies section in her qualifier and finished a very respectable mid table as reported in en earlier post.

A week later Mason Hannant started his qualification journey at The Rushcliffe Golf course representing the Links mens section in Division 3. Mason played an excellent round of golf finishing top in Division 3 and as Overall mens winner with a winning score of 40 points.

Earlier this month Mason competed in the final. Having made last years final he wanted to give a better account of himself this year. This year the competition was played on The Hotchkin Course, a course Mason hadn't played before and a significant test.

With an up and down front nine, Mason rallied on the back nine to post an impressive 37 points. Sadly not quite enough to win the day but he did finish an incredible 3rd place.

An impressive achievement for a young man who has only been playing golf for approximately 4 years.

Stanley Mansfield Cup

The annual edition of this event which is a Texas Scrambletook place on Sunday 23rd August.

The weather was excellent and the plane conditions were good.

18 players making up 6 teams were only separated by two shots at the end of the day and three teams were equal on a net score of 58 at the end.

On countback the winning team was made up of Martin Lawes, Alex Shepherd, and Ivor Collett. The other two teams on 58 were Mason Hannant, Dom Hazard, Mike Jones and Dave Bayle, MNG and Graham Muirhead

We all enjoyed cake left over from the charity day the previous day and all the twos money was donated to the charity.

A good time was had by all.
