A year of thick fog and fantastic rowing!
After some slight disruption to the racing schedule, we have returned from the World Pilot Gig Championships with some fantastic results across the board. All crews have worked hard on and off the water over the past 6 months and this weekend made it all worth it.
Big thank you to all who work hard behind the scenes to make it all possible.
Congratulations to Helford River Gig Club for their win in the Ladies Open Championships and Looe Rowing Club for retaining their Men’s World Championship title for a fourth time.

Our own club results :

The Men’s Vets rowing Ann Glanville and Men’s Super-Vets, rowing An Dhowrlann both successfully defended their championship titles 🥇🥇, with the men’s Super-Vets B crew rowing Amazon finishing a very respectable 22nd

For the first time we were able to field a Ladies Super-Vets crew who, rowing An Dhowrlann, finished a fantastic 4th (just missing out on the podium) and our Ladies Vets crew, three of whom were taking part in their first championships, finished 39th rowing in Ann Glanville

In the Ladies Open, the A crew rowing An Dhowrlann finished in 3rd place 🥉, making it the sixth championship in succession that our Ladies A have finished in the top 3. The Ladies B crew (rowing Ann Glanville) finished 14th overall, the Ladies C (in Amazon) finished 37th (winning group D) and the Ladies D (rowing H4H Valiant) came 121st.

In the Men’s Open, the A crew (in An Dhowrlann) finished in 9th place, with the Men’s B (Ann Glanville) in 13th (winning Group B ). The Men’s C (Amazon) finished 38th and the Men’s D (rowing RAF St Mawgan’s Vigila) finished 88th.

Thank you very much to RAF St Mawgan for the loan of Vigila and Help4Heroes for the use of H4H Valiant.

Key info

Race order and provisional first round draws for the Mixed Championships next Saturday.

We have 40 races to get through in total. There will be a race being set off every 4 minutes with 3 heats on the water at a time, so please be organised and make sure your crew is on the pontoon ready for changeovers when called for.

We are still awaiting confirmation of the gigs that will be used in the pool. This information will be put on the display boards for all heats on the day so please refer to the board to find out what gig you are allocated for each heat/race.

All clubs will need to bring enough oars for each of their crews, as there may be a cross over i.e. more than one of your crews may be on the water at the same despite being in separate categories.

This year the event does not coincide with Saltash Regatta so Old Ferry Road will be open and there will be limited parking near the waterside. The Town car parks will also be open and all are within a 10 minute walk of the waterside. Please do not obstruct residents driveways if parking in residential streets.

We will have a stall on the green for refreshments and Ashtorre Rock and Just Be (under the bridges) will also be open. Alcoholic beverages will be available on the green in the afternoon.

We look forward to welcoming you all to Saltash next Saturday!

A big thank you and shout out to Salcombe Gig Club, for how they dealt with the unfortunate incident that occurred in the first race, and for getting the racing resumed later in the day. The quick actions of all involved in making sure everyone was accounted for and recovered safely was exemplary and a credit to our gig rowing community. Thank you to the safety boats and all the other clubs in attendance who assisted on the water in the immediate aftermath, or who lent us cushions/ pins / lifejackets, etc, to enable us to carry on racing later in the day! Also thank you to the Salcombe Harbour Master for his assistance in recovering Amazon. Thankfully, other than a few broken pins, everyone and everything came home in one piece. 💙

Thank you to everyone who participated in todays race. It was great to see all the gigs back on the water and we hope you enjoyed the start to the season.

Please see below the results. We are aware that a couple of gigs did not start in their allocated heat. We believe we have accounted for this. If you have any queries please email: [email protected] and we will do our best to rectify.

We have had lots of emails/messages asking if the Three Rivers Race on Saturday will be going ahead. WE CAN CONFIRM IT WILL DEFINITELY BE ON.

HOWEVER, we have made the decision to bring the start time for the ladies race forwards to 11.30am.

COXES meeting will now be at 11.00am

All clubs in the later arrival slot, please can you try and arrive by 10.30am at the latest, with an aim to have all gigs launched by 10.45am.

Some parts of the course may be challenging, particularly for the mens race with wind over tide. Any crews that are struggling or don’t feel they wish to continue have the option of stopping when they reach the bridges before embarking on the second half of the course, the bottom end of which (marked with a ❌ on the photo) will be the most exposed. Only crews that complete the full course will have a finish time/result.

We look forward to seeing you all on Sat and that you have a great day!
