This weekend is the Mission City Farmers Market Seedy Saturday at Heritage Park Middle School. Stop by and pick up your plants or seeds.

If you are thinking of relocating a bin outside location is the key. I would suggest a garage, then a shed and lastly somewhere where it can get some protection from out wet winters here in the lower mainland or snow in other parts of the province.

Here are a few suggestions for keeping outdoor worm bins in winter;

1. Provide insulation – ideas can include surrounding your worm bin with hay bales or attaching sheets of blue board insulation foam. By keeping a lid on it will keep the heat in.
2. Construct a larger bin for outside winter use. By building a larger bin you can load one side at a time with organics. As the organics decompose they give off heat. The larger bin will allow the Red Wigglers to migrate to an area where the temperature is safer for them and then migrate back to the organics when the temperature drops.
3. Provide a heater. Seed tray warmers placed on top work well. Or using a 4 litre plastic milk jug, pop bottle or large jar filled with water and submerse am aquarium fish tank heater. The works will migrate to the warmer area around the heated water.

These are just a few ideas. By purchasing a cheap thermometer you can keep an eye on the temperature to monitor how the bin is doing. Remember that as the temperature drops into the low double digits and single digits that worms will slow down production. Try to keep the bin above 5 degrees, the eggs can freeze but the worms can’t !

Casting are great this time of year for all your garden seedlings. I like to add a small handful to each tomato plant when i transplant them into the vegetable garden. I also planted some new trees and to help with the root growth i add a large handful to the root ball and them around the base of the tree. To replenish my existing outdoor pots i add several handfuls of casting to the top and gently mix in.
