Fred is in Korea 🥋
This is Jangchungdan Park in Seoul. It may have played a significant role in the origins of our karate style.

Before opening his historic martial arts school, Lee Won-kuk is said to have had an encounter here that profoundly influenced his vision of preserving Korea's indigenous fighting traditions.

In August 1944, about a month before establishing his school, Lee observed an elderly man performing a rhythmic jumping and kicking exercise over three triangular holes dug into the ground in Jangchungdan Park. Curious about the unusual practice, he approached the man and learned that the discipline was Taekkyon, Korea's traditional foot-fighting art.

Already highly trained in Shotokan Karate under Gichin Funakoshi in Japan, as well as in older Chinese martial arts, Lee reportedly regarded this encounter as confirmation of his desire to revive a distinctly Korean martial identity. He subsequently established his school under the name Tang Soo Do Chung Do Kwan ("The School of the Blue Wave").

The park contains several memorials commemorating that struggle, making it a fitting venue for the public exhibition of Korean martial arts.

Following Korea's liberation in 1945 and later the end of the Korean War, martial arts schools organised public Yeonmu-daehwa (demonstration exhibitions) to recruit students, display technical skill, and promote Korean martial arts. Jangchungdan Park became one of the principal venues for these events.

It's fascinating to stand in a place where so much of Korean martial arts history unfolded and to reflect on the connections between this park, Chung Do Kwan, and the traditions that continue to influence our own training today

🥋A Historic Weekend of Recognition for EKKA’s Founder, Mick Blackwell🥋

This weekend marks an extraordinary moment in EKKA history, as our founder and head of style, Mick Blackwell, received two monumental honours celebrating a lifetime of dedication, excellence, and leadership in martial arts.

Saturday: A Global Honour from the World Martial Arts Organisation

On Saturday, Mick was formally recognised by the World Martial Arts Organisation for over 50 years of unwavering dedication, exceptional teaching, and unparalleled contribution to the martial arts world.

From inspiring generations of students to continually elevating technical standards across disciplines, his influence has shaped athletes, instructors, and entire martial arts communities. His leadership and passion are the foundations upon which EKKA has been built — a culture of discipline, respect, and excellence that thrives today because of his vision.

This honour also celebrates his remarkable fighting career, where his skill, determination, and warrior spirit set a benchmark for others to follow. Whether on the mats, in the dojo, or in life, Mr. Blackwell represents the true essence of a martial artist

Sunday: Awarded 10th Dan by Ticky Donovan OBE

The celebrations continued on Sunday with an achievement few ever attain: Mick Blackwell was awarded his 10th Dan, presented by Ticky Donovan OBE, a recognition given only to those whose lifetime impact on martial arts is truly historic.

From his first steps onto the mat in 1962 practicing Judo, to transitioning into Karate in 1964, Mr. Blackwell’s journey has been nothing short of legendary. His dedication saw him hitchhiking across England simply to train, fighting fearlessly as part of the iconic EKKA Meteors, and later leading the EKKA Association for more than half a century.

Over the decades, he has developed hundreds of black belts, inspired countless martial artists, and built an organisation whose reach extends far beyond the dojo doors.

In fact, AKKA in Australia would not exist today without the foundation, training, and guidance that came directly from Mr. Blackwell and the legacy he created through EKKA

A Legacy That Will Continue for Generations

Our congratulations from this side of the world!
