The club was established in 1885, although very little is known about the early years as club records only exist after the Second World War, earlier documentation being lost or unrecorded. Earliest successes started in the 1920s, particularly in the latter half to the early thirties, when the first team were winners of the Hunts Senior Cup on four occasions, the Chatteris Engineers Cup and the Hunts Scott Gatty Cup (now a junior competition). This was mirrored by the reserves, who won the Hunts Junior Cup twice in this period. Prior to this, the second string were champions of the Hunts Minor League in 1923-24. After the war the club re-entered the Peterborough League, but two seasons later in 1948 they moved back to the Hunts League. In 1950 the first team entered Division Two of the United Counties League, where they remained for six seasons, achieving runners up in 1954-55 before entering the Premier Division of the Peterborough & District Football League. During their time in the Peterborough Premier the Town twice achieved runners up to Soham Town Rangers in 1959-60 and 1961-62 and won the Peterborough Senior Cup in 1963-64, when Parson Drove were defeated 1-0 in the final at Chatteris. The reserve team followed the Town to the Peterborough League in 1959 and were joined by the ‘A’ team on its formation in 1978. The reserves again won the Hunts Junior Cup in 1952, the Benevolent Cup in 1957-58 and the Hunts
Lower Junior Cup in 1975-76 and 1977-78. In 1988-89 the first team joined the newly formed Division One of the Eastern Counties League, the reserves moved to the Cambs League and the ‘A’ team to the Hunts League. In 1995-96 the ‘A’ team joined the reserves in the Cambs League following the break up of the Hunts League. Part of the land for the Sports Field which the club occupies with the Cricket Club was donated by a local farmer and additional land, purchased by public subscription, was laid out and drained in 1946. The Supporters Club provided the start of the Club House in 1948 with the purchase of an ex-WD hut to form dressing rooms and a tea room. These have had an exterior brick skin built around them over the years but the interior mostly still exists, although part of it has been converted into a bar and has had a large extension added in recent times to provide a lounge and function room with associated cloaks etc. Entry to the now sponsored Jewson League Division One demanded improved ground standards, and the club rose to the challenge of meeting the necessary criteria. A major refurbishment of the changing rooms to provide en-suite facilities for both teams and match officials took place during the summer of 1990, while a post and rail barrier was erected together with the provision of footpaths. The purchase of floodlighting columns from a defunct Peterborough City and subsequent E******N took place in the autumn of 1992, with the first game under floodlights taking place on 5th December of that year against Long Sutton Athletic. A crowd of 128 saw “The Witches” secure a 4-0 win. A public address system was installed, and in 1994 work on constructing extra changing rooms was started by the thriving youth set up. A year later a mobile home was purchased and converted into a hospitality suite. On 18th October 1994 the club was privileged to host the commemorative match to celebrate the centenary of the Hunts F.A., featuring a Hunts F.A. XI against an F.A. In 1994-95, under the management duo of Robbie Cooke and John Cozens, the Town won the Hunts Senior Cup for the first time in 62 years and achieved promotion to the Jewson Premier Division the following season. The management partnership culminated with the Town reaching the final of the Jewson League Cup in 1997-98. After defeating strong opposition along the way the side lost the final 4-2 to Woodbridge Town. The ‘A’ team, meanwhile, joined the reserves in the Cambs League in 1996-97 following the break up of the Hunts League and gained promotion the following season. In the spring/summer of 1996 the Owen England stand was erected and was duly opened by Dr Brian Mahwinney M.P. on 9th August 1996 before a commemorative match against a Derby County XI. At the same time the car park was extended and a players’ walkway added.
