It doesn’t matter how old or what language they speak, it’s never too early to start learning about our oceans.

The ocean, which covers more than 70% of Earth’s surface, is surprisingly underrepresented in most education systems. While students often learn extensively about land-based ecosystems, history, and geography, ocean science is frequently reduced to brief units or optional topics. This gap leaves many people unaware of the ocean’s critical role in regulating climate, supporting biodiversity, and sustaining human life through food and oxygen production. As a result, ocean literacy remains low, limiting public understanding of issues like overfishing, pollution, and climate change. Expanding ocean-focused education could help foster a stronger sense of environmental responsibility and better prepare future generations to protect this essential global resource.

If we want a future where our planet thrives, we can’t keep overlooking the ocean. Start by learning or teaching a child something new about marine life, support ocean conservation efforts, and advocate for stronger ocean education in schools. Spark conversations, and push for change. Because protecting the ocean starts with understanding it 🩵

What’s something you love teaching people about our oceans or a marine life creature?

Germany to Boston for a weekend??? Yes I did that. And it was the most incredible weekend ever.

I attended the Boston Sea Rovers Clinic! And I truly loved every moment of it. For those other West Coasters who’ve either never heard of it or never gone, The Clinic is the longest-running dive show in the United States. It brings together divers, underwater photographers, explorers, and marine experts for a weekend of presentations, workshops, and exhibits focused on ocean exploration, conservation, and diving techniques. Known for its strong sense of community, the clinic features renowned speakers, an amazing film festival, and an exhibit hall showcasing the latest in dive gear and travel opportunities, including local NE dive shops/clubs, opportunities, and resources.

My favorite part was definitely the film festival. It was SO educational, inspiring, and each film showcased something so profound. I left feeling a much greater appreciation for our world and conservation.

Every seminar was also so educational and informative. It was so hard to pick which ones to go to! I wish I could have seen them all. I also attended two workshops, one by on recreational dive safety and another on Visual Storytelling, where I had to think outside the box to make a story out of a horseshoe crab molt. I learned a lot!

I didn’t realize I was surrounded by so many extremely influential and successful divers everywhere I turned. It was incredible and due to its smaller size, made for a great opportunity to connect more personally with these dive legends.

The best part? This clinic is open to the public and very affordable! They even have a free day for kids! Kids Day offers a fun, hands-on introduction to ocean life. Children can explore touch tanks, watch live demonstrations, join interactive games and crafts, and learn about marine animals and ecosystems through engaging presentations, including the Careers in Marine Science exhibition, which introduces them to real-world ocean-related jobs. A family-friendly experience that sparks curiosity and interest in marine science and conservation.

My first DEMA Review! Here’s what I learned from where the diving world does business.

I had been dreaming of going to DEMA for years since becoming an Instructor, and last year despite moving to Germany in September, I made it happen!

I found more value in walking the show floor and interacting with other people than I did from most of the seminars. My favorite seminars included ’s Dive Like a Girl and Women in Diving Panel, the first ever meeting for the Dive Industry for Young Professionals, and attending the NAUI Annual General Meeting. Also, anything that Annie Crawley does, because anytime she speaks you can’t help but be filled with inspiration.

I didn’t really have a goal going into the show. My friend was looking for job opportunities, but I wasn’t clear on what I wanted out of the show besides the experience. Having a clear goal would make setting your priorities and schedule much easier. I’m still in the process of figuring this out… and it’s okay not to know! We’ll see where the rest of 2026 takes us.

My favorite evening was the NAUI social, where I had a lovely time conversing and interacting with other members. I had a great time meeting board members, representatives, and employees. Getting to meet and see the faces of your dive agency in real life and interact with them was extremely valuable.

I was so happy to see familiar faces from back home, including my former DSO, and other Oregon Zoo divers, , and . In an overwhelming giant show floor of people, you have no idea how much seeing your familiar and friendly faces meant to this lost guppy.

DEMA was the start of me trying to learn more about our national and global dive industry along with figuring out where I can fit in along the way. Excited to see how next years at New Orleans goes. If anyone wants to split a hotel, let me know!

BOOT DUMP! 🩵

Working in Hall 12 at the boot show this year was an amazing experience! I learned tons about the incredible dive destinations we have in our beautiful blue planet, thanks to the wonderful team at Absolut Scuba. From the Sea of Cortez to the Red Sea to Yap! There are so many amazing places in our world and it was wonderful to connect with people from those places and hear from them directly.

Although confined mostly to Hall 12, I did spend a couple hours walking most of the show. My favorite thing about the show was that unlike DEMA, this show is open to consumers. So anyone can go! You can try out diving, mermaiding, freediving, sailing, wakeboarding, foiling, paddling, etc! And I loved seeing all the school groups, giving young kids the opportunities to try different water sports. If you love water, then this is the place to be. Although January isn’t the most favorable time to visit Germany, it’s definitely worth a stop to check out the largest international water sports show in the world 😅

This year was also the first year was at the show! I met one of our Board Members, and all the EU Reps! Learned about NAUI dive centers in Europe, and saw the NAUI partnerships with Ocean Reef and STEP Dive. Excited to see their next booth, this time all in one dive hall!

Happy Valentine's Day to all my ocean lovers out there!

Considering I am "Maggie Loves Scuba" it's time to spread some love like I used to back in the day! And what a perfect day to explain what ML Scuba really is all about.

It all started in high school when I had an idea for my broadcast media class: I would film myself surprising people with a joyful "Happy Valentine's Day" all while handing out valentines, chocolates and real roses. The joy it brought to people's faces was directly replicated in the joy that it brought everyone who watched the final video. But why leave this joy exclusively for the 14th of February? Keep spreading the love throughout the year! And so Maggie Loves You was born.

This was then adapted into Maggie Loves Scuba when I discovered diving in 2018, in an effort to spread joy and love for diving, our oceans and share it with the rest of the world. I'd say many people have this same ideation, and the more we can collaborate together to love and support one another in protecting, educating ourselves, and conserving our oceans, the better our industry will be.

So today I encourage you to spread some love and kindness to a stranger. Whether that be on Instagram, your local coffee shop, or the guy at Subway that makes your sandwich. Light up the joy in each other!
